Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I'm new to the NN club - not something I'd ever buy for myself, but I was given a pair and they're so ugly they're cute! Meet Rueben, his 'wife' is Rachel... but no pictures of her unfortunately.

greenSearcher,I still haven't processed a chicken. I don't have a problem eating a chicken that I raised because, like you, I prefer knowing it's fate. Especially if it's a rooster that I am pretty sure isn't going to find a great home in a backyard flock. Thanks for the insightful information.

Congrats! also like rose combs on NN.. even made a few a long time ago.. bred a handsome white NN with perfect rose comb. was all excited about it but got a severe lashing from another NN breeder about him(fouling up the breed and all that stuff). Put me off that idea for a while.

It is coming back in one of my current projects though.

I wonder, does it make any difference between rose and single on NN roos living in cold winter areas? I'd think rose might offer more protection against frost bite, but does it..?

Yep, especially if she is from a backyard hobbyist. NN mixed with other breeds is very common from private persons, not so much from hatchery stock. The reason is because the naked neck gene is dominant so crosses will throw chicks with NN and they often get sold as turkens or NN as if they're "purebred". Check her comb, if she has pea, she's NN mixed with either EE, Amer or Araucana. Just in case, check the combs on other hens if they have pea...

I do have typical looking NN with single combs that lay colored eggs but that's a very uncommon combination(single comb & colored eggs).

Cielo, excellent pictures and that chick did turn out pure for NN.

Would be super if you could take pictures of your pure NN next to non-pure NN to show others the differences at hatching? It's way clearer on yours than in my pictures.

Yeah, I'll put something together. Thank you for your help. I wasn't aware of the genetic variation before my hatch. I'm grateful to learn more about it.

Cielo.....as Nava says....let's have the full frontal (or side) of that baby as your avatar.(Maybe time to change mine, too!).

It's sad that the wording of breed standards can be ambiguous......it needs to be clear for folk to be able to do their best in shows. Maybe someone should e-mail them to eliminate any ambiguity.

I'll have to look at the British standards to see if any of mine come anywhere near to them. I might enter a few of mine next year as NN's won the "Novelty class" last year (OH, I'm talking about a small town agricultural show, not a national championship. There's some hope of being placed as there are only about 3 entries in some of the categories....which include..."Prettiest boy" "Prettiest Cross" and "Strangest Bird".....ho ho....found my category!)

DDD I wouldn't think that "they didn't like the frizzles they hatched out" is the number one reason for the exchange. Down here in Low Cal we trade etc. #1 because we want to make room for some other bird and we have too many in limited space plus #2 we think that some other person may enjoy that particular bird or birds. # 3 it is fun to have a rotating flock of special birds instead of just a laying flock. Ah there are just too many reasons but do not be sad about it. Some peeps don't like NNs others do not like crests and horror of horrors some don't even like silkies. And I don't understand that since I think that they are so funny.
