Naked Neck/Turken Thread

X 4 " No naked area showing on neck section " means that if you have a bird without an area of nakedness on the neck it it can not be entered under the NN class. Some lawyer must write that stuff because it could be written so that it could be easily understood with have a counselor around. We need more communications classes in our educational systems instead of legalize

I agree with others, both total bare necks or a small bowtie with few feathers on mid-neck are fine for showing.

The above quote probably means either a bird with NO naked neck at all, possible some might interpret it as including the not pures with the big bowtie with tons of feathers hiding most of the neck.

Lastly, total bare neck vs small bowtie should be considered a personal preference, even though the language implies bare necks are preferred in the SOP. There are breeders who like no bowtie at all, and some who prefer a small one. Both are acceptable for showing. But with the wording, it is possible that between two birds equal in everything, except one has no bowtie at all may be awarded the prize only because of the way the SOP is worded.

so a pure nn with no feather on the neck or maybe a couple, might beat a bow tie nn

thanks guys.

I am interested in the meat possibilities of the Turken. I usually don't process my chickens for eating because I find feathers to be a hassle and hardly worth the time. I raise rabbits and my sister raises goats so that forms the bulk of my meat. Rabbits and goats are easy to butcher. Feathers... argh, such a mess! So a lightly feathered chicken with size intrigues me. It could be the perfect chicken? Coupled with their unique goofy looks...

Do you find them to be okay in Winter? Winter where I live averages a daily high in the high 30s- 40s and daily lows of high 20s- low 30s. I live in kind of a desert basin by the Columbia River in Washington State. Not the coldest but not warm either, looking at that naked chick I have visions of chicken turtle neck sweaters!

Thanks again for the help!

Check out greenSearcher's excellent post on butchering experience. My winters are similar to yours, they do just fine.. even the bantams. I don't treat them any different from any other breed.

p.s. congrats to Gordon! We all know he's a beautiful beast.

The spring time will be perfect weather for me to have new blue NN chicks. I am looking forward to have some of your beautiful babies.
And yes the folks here on this thread are exceptionally nice as are most BYCers. Raising chickens makes folks sweet. My new bumper sticker !

Anyone got silky feathered, frizzled NN's, I want to breed some, have some silkie x NN's due soon.... first step to show girls, but wana go that one step further..... frizzle them too

The things that they do not know hurt other folks. The pullet is absolutely gorgeous and rose combs make more sense than large single combs. Even though I admit most folks think that single combs are the only combs.

I stopped entering my ceramics in the local fair after the dopey comments by the judges who obviously do not know anything about clay works and ceramics.

Yes there are at least two wonderful breeders here who have frizzles/silkie/EE/NN and a few (myself included) more that are looking to raise some of their own. I am not so sure about having frizzle gene after seeing the molt pictures.

Ah so it is possible, any pics of these strange creatures? How noticable is the frizzle on the silkied feathers?
