Naked Neck/Turken Thread

TurkenChicks.jpg

I just hatched these 7 winners. My first Turkens! 2 have feathers on their necks. 4 have the larger bowties. 1 is pretty naked necked as you can see in the 2 photos of the single chick. I named him Gobbler for obvious reasons. Turkens might be my favorite...

Okay, are. Turkens are my favorite! For years I didn't get them because my friends and family thought they were ugly. I don't care anymore. I think Turkens are beautiful!

OK,OK now that you admitted to having your favorite breed, go ahead and let that chick in your avatar come out so that every one can see the whole body and see that it was a turken, now that you are not afraid SHOW IT TO THE WORLD

I am back to report on the feathering and harvesting. There is a huge difference between NN and normal birds and it isn't just the neck. There is a lot less feathers on a not pure NN, so I can imagine harvesting a pure NN rooster would be really quick. I found that the boys only had strips of feathers on their chest, down the keel bone and on the sides. Under the wings and between the feathered areas the skin is completely smooth, they have a really clean carcass. What feathers there is that are along the back and legs were more down like than hard, it was just the tail w/ hard to pull feathers. I did a dry pluck since I was skinning them basically. The birds are also very lean. Last week's bird had quite a bit more body fat, but Marans tend to carry more fat anyway. They were about 22 wks old, and the breasts were obviously not as meaty as a Cornish X would be at 8 wks, but the legs and thighs were impressive. Twice the size of the store bought.

Now I know that most of you won't harvest your birds, I certainly don't with my hens, but if you have an excess of roosters and can make your self do it, it is worth the effort-it was only my second time and it took less than 2 hours to harvest both the boys. It will be faster with practice. Still had the queasy stomach until the carcass looked more like meat and less like bird, and I have to put the meat in the fridge/freezer for a few days to distance it from the living bird. For me this is better than giving them away and no knowing that they met their fate quickly. I can't bear the idea of one of my birds being fed live to any animal. Wish that the male to female ratio was more like 1:6

I want to thank everybody for compliments on my black pullet. But I have to confess, all I did was hatch the eggs. The breeder of my lovely birds is Frank Bayliss in VA. He loves NNs and breeds nice ones.

I don't know what to do please help.

I can't keep all the NN chicks I hatch, when I found out that in order for the nn to breed true I needed one with out a bow tie I made that my goal.

then I like showing birds, and I was reading today in the ASP book and this is what it says about

DISQUALIFICATIONS : No naked area showing on neck section

then it goes to say that it has to have a small tuff ( bow tie )

now that I have a good amount of Pure Naked Necks I have to breed again to get more bow ties and start again
I'm afraid I'm going to have to get rid of the pure ones and only breed for bow ties I'm so confused at the moment I can't think straight.

the only color accepted to show that I have is Black but still.................

I interpret the SOP this way. Under NECK it says "...devoid of feathers, except for a permissible small tuft at front of neck..." The key word here is permissible. Permissible means it is allowed. It does not mean, to me, it is required. Therefore those with or without bow ties can be shown. Under DISQUALIFICATIONS, it states, "No naked area showing on neck section." It means exactly what it says. You can have a few feathers, or bow tie, but if so, there must be a naked area showing on the neck somewhere. There always is on the back of the neck. This is the way I interpret the SOP and if my interpretation is correct, there is no problem with what you are breeding, Nava.

Hi! I think you are misinterpreting that bit from the ASOP.
What it says is:
NECK: Medium in length; devoid of feathers, except for a permissible small tuft at front of neck nearly half-way down; skin very smooth.

So to me, that says the neck should be devoid of feathers (naked), but it is OK, but not necessary that they have a bow-tie.

did you look in the disqualifications?

I have the 2010 edition and it says on pg 197 under qisqualifications * No naked area showing on neck section *
