Naked Neck/Turken Thread

My dogs were going nuts - barking like crazy out in the back pasture the other day. I went out just in time to see a hawk perched way up on top of the utility pole fly away. I very rarely see hawks on our property and now I think I know why :). My dogs are very protective of our chickens and I have seen them chase turkey vultures off our property before (by barking at them like crazy til they finally get annoyed and fly away)... they even chase deer away from the chickens... good dogs!

oldorchardfarms, What a fun place to be every day, but a lot of work!! Thanks for sharing the video.
WyoChickenMamma, WOW! I would NOT be happy to find THAT in my coop!!
Hipeatall, I've got two dogs I can trust out with the chickens. One is sleeping most of the time, the other chases crows away.
While I don't want the crows in the coop, I do want them hanging around since they're my alarm for Hawks.

Here's our resident Red-tailed Hawk. I probably should cut down this dead oak, but what's that saying...keep your enemies close. At least I know when she is out there. I hollered at her in the tree and she flew right past me. She's out there every day. I don't see her really even looking at the chickens, but I won't let my bantams free range anymore because of her.

Scary posts!!

NYRIR I think that you are right about the first chick being partridge. The third may be blue also but a more diluted blue. All of them look good and I would accept them into my flock easily. Gender is mostly a guessing game at this stage. Keep posting those pictures.

thank you! I do believe the oldest (the lightest blue) is a hen...she seems to talk to the younger ones and looks as if she has hatched a clutch recently...very skinny, featherless areas on sides of breastbone. She also gets very upset if she can see chicks and not get to them.

ETA she looks almost grey in color...don't know if that shows in the pic...

I'm looking for some fertile eggs to start a NN flock with. I'm in Michigan, near Ypsilanti. Anyone have any? Can you mail these and still hatch them? At this time of year? I also have a place in Ontario, Canada. Know any source up there? Thanks,

Joe47

This may be an odd question but I figured the NN experts may have the answer. Our little NN chick has some dry skin on its neck. Is there anything I can do for it? Could I put baby lotion on it or vaseline maybe?
