Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Okay I have a question, this is my second time w/ baby chicks and first time w/ NN babies. We finally got our chicks, but it isn't good only 4 are alive, most were DOA and a couple nearly DOA that only lived a few hrs after they got here. The 4 we have left aren't as active as I remember my other baby chicks, but that isn't my question, time will just have to tell on them but my

. My question is these chicks sleep standing on thier heads, is this normal for NN's, b/c my EE babies didn't do that?

I can't say I ever seen mine sleep standing on their heads but I did notice when they are newly hatched it seems like their heads are heavy for them. Oh BTW, one of my NN girls went broody and she was hoarding her eggs in a coop I wasn't using and so far she has 4 new babies with another one pipped. Two of the babies have a naked neck!! I was hoping for more NN's!

I have raised different types of chicks and I have seen some from time to time fall asleep instantly...sometimes while standing. I'd say there's a problem if they only slept this way. If you find them in all sorts of positions, sometimes like this, then I'd say it's normal.

They almost always sleep this way, very seldom any other way.

I am even more worried about it considering 15 were shipped and only 5 made it here alive, and of those another died w/i hours.

Well I think technically 6 made it alive one died almost instantly after arrival.

Are they eating and drinking Ok for you? How long have they been with you? It sounds like they might have had a rough trip to get to you.
I have seen chicks fall asleep standing up but it usually isn't for very long. Maybe try some vitamins and electrolytes to perk them up a bit to see if that helps??

They are drinking, but I don't think the little blue one is drinking enough and I have to help it drink a lot. I added honey (just a little) to the water. I got them Sat morning. I know 2 are eating the smallest yellow one and the largest black one. The other two I'm not sure about I have tried to encourage them to eat, but I haven't seen those two eat w/o my interference.

That doesn't sound good Kassaundra. So sorry for you and the birdies. Personally I would ask for a refund considering all that your have been through. After all this is a business venture for the hatchery and for your personal gardening etc. expenses.

What has helped my little ones that were slow to start is I would mix chick feed with water to make it like a gruel. I make it so it is a little runny. This way when they do take some in they get both nutrition and fluid. I add some vitamins to it. You could try some sav-a-chick usually found at feed stores or poly-vi-sol without the iron. If you would happen to have pedialyte on hand you could try that for the electrolytes. I would hold them and put the mixture on a spoon and dip their beaks in it to encourage them. Hopefully once they figure it out they will start to eat on their own but it could take a few days, several times a day until they are eating enough on their own.
I am so sorry you lost so many and hope the remaining pull through! Keep us posted on how they are doing!
