Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I saw some where that when they are chicks you can tell by their wing feathers. Girls feather's grow faster and they will have longer feather's on the second row. This has worked almost all the time for me. I also read at anther yet to be remembered location that if you drop a wadded up paper towel or something like that in the brooder the females will run and the males will check it out. When I got Jupiter the lady blew on her but and somehow knew from that but I don't know that trick yet. Martha is a retired laying hen so I already knew she was a she.

I had heard about the feather thing, but mine were to old when I got them 5-7 wks. I keep going back and forth w/ mine male or female. I'm pretty good at picking out the boys w/ the EE's but these NN's are much harder for me.

chicken math struck again.

started out saying "all i want is 2". so what did i do? i went out and came home with 2 silkies and 2 showgirls. ok fine. but then i thought "we need a couple hens that will lay large eggs." so i decided to go pick up 2 turken chicks about an hour drive north of home. yet for some reason i bought 5. i guess that's what happens if you went to a kentucky school like i did. :D

I have tried the wing feather thing with my last hatch, but I couldn't tell really what I was looking at, or for. I guess I will have to wait six months to find out with my showgirls.

KLF73- those are cute chicks! I would love to see the coloring as they grow!

Cracked egg- love Em!

Always projects going. I kind of have the chacteristics I want in these birds, but have to work to increase size.
It is the same proj I started with, Giant Black-Skin Frizzle Naked Neck Green-Eggers --- I have the Frizz FM NN G-E, and there is still a ways to go, size-wise.

Here are my six babies that are looking like grown ups but are just several
months old:

The brown looking pullet is a poorly laced blue laced red but I think she is the least pretty of all but Hector the blue laced red will fix that in any off springs.
