Name your quietest chicken breed - Poll

My silkies are very quiet until its time to lay... or its my rooster who talks loudly now because he's in conversation with the roosters off in the distance by a local farm. He's not as loud as the are as I can't hear him in the house... but he crows every hour it seems!

I hear most chickens do get louder at laying point though... that's for all breeds.

Just for clarification, I'm doing this purely for curiousity sake, I'm not looking for a quiet chicken personally. I've just noticed many urban or underground newbies asking about this. Please keep the answers coming, this isn't enough to be conclusive in any way yet!

You don't need to say buff orpington, all orpingtons are the same (except for color

Thank you! This is becoming a great lesson in chicken breeds for me too! I'll change that now!

My EE is very quiet, as is my Sicilian Buttercup. The only noise she makes is a squeak when somebody pecks her. She is at the bottom of the pecking order, so whoever said that might be on to something! My loudest hen is my Buff Cornish and she is at the top of the pecking order. My Blue Cochin is quiet until she lays and egg, then hoo-boy! My Ancona is also really loud.

Annmarie, I'm noticing that some breeds don't have votes against . . . Perhaps, if attention was drawn to them, that might change.

Maturity makes a huge difference on the issue of noise. I once had 35 chicks in a small backyard for over 3 months without any neighbor realizing they were there. And, like some others, I also think that pecking order has something to do with noise. Those at the bottom may be happy to keep a low profile in the flock.

Finally, if folks want to keep chickens under stealth conditions, surely they won't think to have a rooster of any breed.

Steve
