Nankins

My 25 unsexed Nankin bantams arrived today at 5 a.m. 1 little one has what looks like wry neck, not really sure what to call it, its neck is curled back and constantly looking at the sky. it can't straighten its neck to eat or drink So i think i will have to cull it in the morning. poor thing the others were picking on it so it is seperated. I was able to get some save-a-chick water down it but am not thinking that will help. out of 50 chicks that came in the same order only one with a problem is not bad, just why did it have to be the nankin! :(

April Fools day was not fun this year, I had 10 Nankin Bantams due to pip out today, I do love my Nankin Bantams and it hurt to lose 6 of the babies. I will take the blame because they where in my care. Four what ever reasons I now have 4 chicks less then a day old. I pray no more will pass away. I have not sexed then yet, tomorrow will be soon enough. We have two Nankin Bantams pullets we hatched in middle of March, we names then after Nankin Rooster named rooster Tooster we love so much that disappeared the day we where moving to Roseburg, Tootsey and Taffey are their names. We have a sweet 6 month old Rooster Nankin Bantam named Gramps after my childhood Rooster I had on the Farm near Junction City, Oregon. The only reason I can think of for why I named him my childhood Rooster Gramps is because I loved my Grandparents so much, they lived on the grain farm all Summer, before going down south for the winter. Their Son worked the farm, their Daughter, and us four children lived in the big farm house my Grandparents built in the 1940. My room up stair was the same room my Mother had as a child. I had Gramps a Brown Leghorn Roosters; Princess was a Rhode Island Red Bantam mix, my Uncle Frank gave me. I loved playing with them on the farm, we grow wheat and barley so always plenty to eat. One summer Princess got sitting fever, and would not leave her nest, I being so young did not do as Grandpa Taylor told me, and she died. Gramps had three young daughters, and one day he took them and headed off across the wheat fields and I never saw them again. I always imagined that they found another farm to live on, and had a long and happy life, I still miss them. I am sorry to say as I was typing this, a little Nankin Bantam chick who would lye on its back passed away. Chicks In Roseburg, Oregon Rod & Carol

I don't believe it was your fault. I have plenty of them left if you want some! I plan on keeping as many as I can and breeding them, but i have one to many Roo's. I would be willing to help you out in any way if you would like a few more! Sorry about your hatch, I have 1 pure bred hen who I got by accident and she just started laying! I don't have a Roo for her yet though thats why we ordered so many chicks besides that i fell in love with the breed. I ordered 25 Unsexed Nankin chicks from Ideal Hatchery. I lost 3 when they were wee babies and sold 2 cockerels to a local here who wants to keep the breed going and wants pullets in the future. LOL!
My Name is Kimberly!

how is it that all the most beautiful birds with best color end up being "just found at a show" with an unknown rogigin, lol

. Maybe I should start looking for mine next newblood on craigslist hehehehehe

That's funny griffinkid! Actually I am going to have a lot of roos to cull, and I was thinking about posting at our local farm stores and possibly using craigslist. Once I start showing I can try to sell birds there. I also liked the idea of contacting 4H and seeing if anyone there would be interested. If I have any birds that have serious defects my daughter has a friend that can take them. They will wind up on the table, but I've done that with a few extra cochin and silkie roos, and one silkie with a crossed beak. With the Nankins being so rare though, if they are still good quality birds, I don't want to do that. At least maybe a 4H kid could use it for showmanship if it's not really breeding material (thanks to a suggestion from someone else!).

With all of the information I've gathered thus far, some of my birds may be a bit on the light side, although I've got a few boys with some really nice dark pink stripes on their legs (from Lund Poultry). The birds I bought from Mary Ann Harley are only a month old, but most of them are quite dark, I'm hoping they're not all cockerels!

I don't think they are though. Hoping for some nice dark girls!

Color is pretty easy to figure out, type is harder for a newbie like me, and from what I've been told is more important. I definitely don't want to cull based only on color. The personalities of my Lund birds are super fantastic. They are very, very friendly and calm! I know this is important to the breed. I have Silkies too and compared to my Lund birds, the Silkies are total nuts-os! I don't know about the size of the birds, and am hoping they are not too big. The only other problem I may have with them is that their wings don't drop down as much as in most of the Nankin pics I've seen. Perhaps they will as the birds get older? I really want to keep my Lund roos as my breeding cocks and put them with my Mary Ann hens for genetic diversity. I need to post pics of my birds and let you all give me your opinions. I will try to do that in the next few days.

M.
