Nankins

The color in Nankins is one of the issues we need to address. Most of the hens seem to fade as they age. In my original 5 hens, 4 of them(2 2008 and 3 2009) the color has faded over time. One has held her color, the black in the wing and tail will also fade. I breed the light hens to the darkest cocks available. I will post a couple pics of the older hens later. thing we have to watch is the color of the lobes. They should be solid red. I have seen several with blue or white in the lobes, both are faults.

Hi Richard, Thanks so much for the pictures, I printed them out to study. So would you mind answering my questions about breeding and which ones to keep from the pics ? The questions were on previous post. I will get better pictures and put them up here this week. How often do you come to Portland? I go about every 6-8 weeks, I used to live in Oregon City and hve friends I visit often. I would love to get whatever you think I should have to improve what I currently have. Thank you so much, Joy

Hi my son Cody took his nankins to the Ohio Nationals and his rooster won Best of Breed..it was the same one who won at the Crossroads National in the JR show,,,he took 4 birds and they were the only ones there but we met many people who were very interested in them ...also they had a nice write up on the nankin posted at the show.....as for fading of the hens all ours have also faded except for one hen....the roosters seem to get better with age....they are such nice little birds.

Joy, of the four i like the type on the first one. I wish he was a little darker. He should get darker when he molts. He has a good comb, good color in the tail, he should have good leg color. They should have a pink stripe down the outside of their leg. I would pair him to your darkest hens. The second cockerel is nice, has good type, I cant tell from the pic if he has good color in his tail, it might be lacking some chestnut colored trim. Does he have good leg and wing color? The third bird i dont like the comb. I would feel better if you knew if it was a injury or genetic. He also looks to lack some color. does he have the leg stripe? How does he compare to the others size wise? I would breed him to the smallest hens with the best type. With rosecombs, i would only breed rosecomb to rosecomb. I havent seem many good combs on birds that were bred sc to rc. Just my opinion. Im sure other breeders that have had more experince with rc could give you better advice about crossing the comb types. Let me know about the leg and tail color and I can try to help a little more.

Okay thanks so much, I will check those characteristics. The cockeral with the damaged comb is a little bigger than the others, not much, I would have to weigh him. I actually think they came from Mary Harley(sp?), because Doug got quite a few in and he got them from a lady in the east, ha I guess everthing is east of us, and I have been reading the posts on her birds, so I am pretty sure thats where my 3rd pair is from. So onward we go. I sure love mine, do wish mine would lay more. I love the little talk the hens do.

Grumpypants momma. The pullet looks pretty good. Its hard to see the color in her tail, The black pattern. her body color looks good. Most of the hatchery birds are a bit big.
Joy most of the bigger birds seem to lack a little type, i have found very good color in a couple of my bigger birds, I have had good results when I pair them to the smallest typest hens I have.
