Nankins

Hi Richard, Okay in the first set of pics are the two cockerals I hatched from you. Which one do you think has better type ? I like the top one better for type, but tell me if I am wrong, I am just learning all this, wish I had paid more attention as a 4-her, but that was 35 yrs ago yikes! But my daughter is 5 and just started poultry 4-Hso I am excited to learn lots more. I will try to get better pics, which by the way how do you? just taking a bunch? So do I keep the trio I hatched from you together for breeding or put the hen in with another cock and give them a different hen? How do I decide what to do with chicks? I have 1 pullet I hatched from 1st pen from doug and 1 cockeral and 4 pullets from 2nd pair from Dougs, so where to those go for breeding when they are old enough? Thanks Joy

Rio We need pics:)

Joy i will try to post a couple picks of the cockerels I like and plan on using in my breeding pens in january. I think they each have different qualities to offer to my breeding program

I am new to owning Nankins I actually only have one, I got it by accident. It's so sweet and calm, comes right up and let's me carry it around the yard when feeding the other chickens!Sure it talks to me the whole time but it never fights me or tries to get away just sits in my arms and talks! At what age do you know the sex of a nankin and what age do they reach maturity?

I am a Newby so here s/he is! any guesses on sex? I am guessing s/he is 10/12 wks as I got it by accident from another person! I love good Accidents!

Who are you quoting?
If me then she was ordered in an assortment from a hatchery! the previous owner gave her to me because she didn't know what she was and thought it might be a boy, so of course didn't want her! now that i know what she is i wish i would have taken the other one too, it looked to be a little cockerel!

Grumpypantsmomma, i was talking about your pullet. If you decide you want a cockerel I have a couple of nice ones. You can have one of them. I would like to see more people raising Nankins. They a great little birds

I just picked up to pure hens and 5 chicks! the chicks are cross bred, some are part silkie, some Houdan! As for Nanny I would love a pure bred man for her, but i will have to wait for a little while we may be moving, and it would be hard to do the move and travel that far to pick one up.
I will keep you in mind and when We get all settled I will definitely send you a message in hopes you will still have a boy for me! They are awesome little birds, Nanny the one i posted pics of is so red she's a beauty but the hens i picked up are much lighter. any suggestions on how to darken the color of chicks when i decide to breed? if i breed a dark roo to nanny will the chick be to dark, and if i breed him to the lighter hens will it improve color of the chicks!
Sorry a lot of questions but i am really beginning to love these gals and want to improve the breeding, as well as inspire others to raise them!

Joy ,

Here are the cockerels I kept this year, sorry it took me so long to get them up. #1 has good type and color, his color is a little to light in the hackle, #2 is one of my favorites type and color but he needs to be a little cleaner in the comb. #3 is very similar to #2. #4 is the best in the group in my opinion. He has good type, very good color. Toes was my favorite as a chick, he lost part of his toes to a predator. I kept him for a breeding cock. He is a little lighter in the hackles after his last molt, I still think he is very nice. I will beed him to my original Cable hens . If you wpold like a cockerel or a couple pullets you are welcome to them for the shipping cost.
