Need advice about goat worming

As far as wormer safeguard is the safest for livestock. You have to double dose for a few days. ie if they say give x amount once, you need to give x amount everyday for 4 days. Or you can give a small amount of Zimectrin GOLD. ie if they say give 2ml for 100lbs and he weights 50 than you would give 1ml. BUT PLEASE READ THE LABEL ON ANYTHING YOU GIVE!!!!! It is easy to overdose them if using a product marked for another species, trust me! Almost killed a sheep when she got the wrong amount.

This said to give 1/10 per 100 pounds and the bag would do 10 goats. Since he's just a youngster. I just gave him about a 1/2 cup. He probably weighs about 20 pounds and I didn't know how to figure that exactly. If anything I didn't give him enough. I didn't want to wait any longer in deworming him because his poop was just full of tape worms and his belly is very expanded. I suspect it's alot of worms. So unless somebody has more advice on how much of this to give him. I'll do it again in 2 weeks and probably again in another 2 weeks. Depends on if he is looking better.

The place I went only had this kind of goat wormer and there was all kinds for horses and cows. There was ivermectin and I almost got it but it said for horses only. With as many goats as there are around here it would seem there would be more things for them.

Oh, and I bought him a small bell for his collar when he gets off the chain.

So we have guinnea running free making that awful noise they make and will have goats with bells. We may have a 1/2 acre here so our yard is our farm. The goat is on a cable and has a long area he can go but he stays behind the trailer mostly.

You can file or nip off the pointy ends of his horns. Some people put tennis balls on the ends of them. If he is an intact male, they not to pet of rub the top of his head. That will tend to make them want to rub or butt you.
I had to explain to my friend one day as she was petting my breeding buck ( he loves people) that it was not wise to rub his chin. She was like "he likes it" I told her that when he wants to put on the cologne for the ladies in the next field, he does so by peeing on the beard on his chin. Then waving his head in the wind to attract them. And that she now had a handfull of "Goat Pee" and that was that nasty smell she was smelling!

So are you saying if I pet and rub his head he will want to rub me or butt me? Then is it saver to pet his body instead of his head. I mainly rub his head and jaws to let him know i'm not afraid of him. Animals i've worked with if I show them i'm not afraid they won't try to hurt me and will be more comfortable around me. I have chickens that follow me around as i do my chores. All they want is treats they think I have and some want petted. All I have to do is walk out on the porch and they are surrounding me. I would like the goat (s) to know I won't hurt them also and be comfortable with me in their pen. I don't mind them rubbing on me as long as I don't get stuck with a horn. I'll have to dull them down. Thats for sure. Billy has gotten me in the chest but I had on a few layers of cloths and it didn't stick me and he didn't butt me very hard either. If he had it may have gone through the cloths and into me. I didn't know I could trim those horns. I'll see to that tomorrow. I have a rotory tool but that may be too noisy for his comfort. I may have to "hog-tie' him to get it done. The trust would go out the door after that for sure.

You WAY overdid the dose. 1/10oz per 100lbs, so at 20lbs he would need 1/5 of that, 1/50 oz. 1/2 cup is equal to 4oz.

So how much would hat be a few grains? I can go and see if he ate it all and take the rest away if he didn't. It won't kill him will it? Oh No poor little guy.

This isn't a liquid, it's pellets. That amount is only a few pellets. I'm sure he ate that much if not a little more. But it's barely noticeable of how much is gone. I think he will be ok. I'll see in the morning. If this bag will worm 5 goats that just a few pellets isn't enough. But i'll see how things to tomorrow.

...just an FYI...to insure the proper dosage on ANYTHING given to a goat, it is best to give it as an oral drench. Hey you can't give these pellets as a drench...No Kidding. Get a fecal egg count done by a trained person, a vet or tech or yourself, determine what worms are present in the goat by either segments or oocysts present then orally dose to kill them or disturb their lifecycle...Safeguard at 3X the label dose will kill tapeworms...Ivomec for everything else...Leave the pellets on the shelf at TSC. and another fyi...the fiasco farms website is an archive, No Longer Updated, and essentially worthless because the owner/operator is no longer in the goat business, maybe becuase she followed her own advice.

Another thing, you should never rub a goat on the head. It makes them think that is how you say hello and they will rub their heads on you in greeting.
I did that with my first group of babies, no more. I scratch them under their chins or pat their backs.
I agree with the pellets not working, you also really need to watch the little guy because a sudden loss of the worms so to speak can send his body into shock. So you should worm him and watch him.
I cannot find my dosage book, but I use Ivomec for cattle and I give it orally not injected. But there is plenty of info on the net for the dosage and if you have a good old fashioned feed store they can tell you. But goats always get more than the cattle dosage wise.

I know it is pellets. That small bag is enough to treat ten 100lb goats. You have one 20lb (have you weighed him?) goat. That means he would need 1/50th of the 1lb bag, ie just a few pellets. Much better to use something you can measure in small doses.
