Hi, I was told not to give male goats alfalfa or to much of it, it can cause problems for in tact males or wethers.

I have used coastal hay , some cracked corn, goat feed... mine freely roam but they really love whole or cracked corn tho...
My girl gets alfalfa in the winter , and some times it is mixed in the pellets I feed them.
I like all purpose live stock loose grain and sweet feed for treats

When I first got my girl she also got sick from the grass in the goat area but I went to the feed store and they had dewormer and gave it to me already measured out and in the applicator without a needle. But I cant think of the name since they prepared it all for me.
I paid like 2.50 for the dosage and they told me to come back again in 3 weeks for another. I had only had her 2 weeks when I noticed she gained no weight at all when eating in fact she lost a load of weight it scared me to death. They said it could have also been stress but to be safe since they didn't deworm her before selling her to me they wanted to give her that medication.

I have a horse fence up 6 ft tall the spacing between are very small and they can't fit their heads through it. Chicken wire will not hold them and they can jump very high. I don't know if goats can pass worms on to others like cats and dogs can but I would be concerned about that too...when adding a new goat in with a goat who is infested with worms...

Editing this to add: when they freely forage they don't really need much feed at all. They will eat all they need in a full day. I add 1 cup per goat of corn just in case they may need a little extra but in the summer I don't feed Coastal hay at all cause they say it will over heat the goats. The extra feed I give only during the winter when plants are dead or dying out. Since he is still a baby you can give him goat feed and loose mineral if you are letting him forage, I like the loose mineral cause it lasts longer and I can see how much they are eating I only offer a coffee cup size scoop of that only when the one from day before has gone down. Some goat feed will already have a little copper added to the food if your lucky to find it in your area. You will get a 100 different answers about what to feed and you will find each and every person has different styles of feeding. Do research what is best keeping in mind somethings you feed a female you can't feed a male.

This is crazy though when I was researching how many types of hay is out there...straw is not a hay they would eat straw can be used as bedding but in the summer I use no bedding at all they have cement slabs they sleep on in their house its easy to clean and when winter is here I add straw to the floor to help with warmth. People use to tell me Goats will eat anything I found that isn't really true they can be quite picky eaters. Its taken me a while to find a balance that will work for me. You will do the same find what works for you.

Hi there. I just wanted to give some adivce on your little buckling. One thing I would suggest is treating for coccidia, stress brings on coccidia, weaning, going to the auction, being by himself, being compromised by worms. I would suggest treating him for ten days with a sulfa drug. Coccida will also cause a large belly. When I deworm, I always repeat in ten days. I do not do the feed dewormers because dewormers work best on a fairly empty belly. I either do ivermenction, Levamisole, or valbazen depending on what I am treating for. I feel my goats all grass hay. Straw is not a forage, it has no nutritional value. Goats can live without grain, but they cannot live without hay, and straw is not a substitute. I use a sanction to trim my goats hooves. It is humane and saves on your back. It might be a great idea to get your little guy to the vet and do a fecal to see what worms you need to be treating for and your vet can help you with management and give you good suggestions. Have you looked at his eyelids? Pull down the bottom eyelid, is it bright pink? Is it white? White is bad. Pale is bad. Also be careful buying from auctions. Goats carry diseases, CL, Johnes and CAE. Most goats that end up at auctions are goats that people didnt want to deal with, sick or had issues. I pen my goats in no climb horse fence, never have problems with them getting out. Tying them on a chain isnt the best situtation. They can hang themselves, the neighbors dogs can kill them, even if you are there. Good luck!

Worming goats.
I bought a goat, he was fine for a month, then He got diarrhea. But acted fine and healthy. Everybody said worms, so i gave him the goat wormer in the red bag, Two days in a row, even though I should have waited a week.
Still had diarrhea.
Then,
I took a stool sample to a vet. They told me he was FULL of hook worms.
Went to TS, and got I ivermectin horse paste. Apple flavored and put it in bread. A sandwich, he loved it.
Still had diarrhea.
I took him in to a different vet, that vet told me he still had some worms and to get the cydectin drench. ($75 )I used it and my goat still had diarrhea and started pooping out tape worms.
I guess it killed all the other worms??
Back to TS, and bought Safeguard paste for horses it is for tape worms in goats.
It’s been almost a week, so today I gave him another dose of cydectin and safeguard paste at the same time.
The very next day he had some pellets again. So it is important to know what kind of worms your goat has.
This has been going on for 4 weeks.
I’ve also been giving him probiotics, B12, iron and gator aide mixed into his medicated goat feed.
This whole time he never acted sick, and never got dehydrated.
