Please help with diagnosis! Symptoms began ~18hrs ago. Lethargic, weak. I can't tell if his crop is impacted, or if it is just the angle of his neck that appears to be bulging out. This is actually my friend's chick and I'm his hospice caregiver today:( He willfully drank ACV and sugar water/olive oil mixture via syringe last night. My friend had another chick from the same breeder that developed same symptoms a couple weeks ago and died. She also had a chick from a different breeder that developed wry neck and is still living. Any help is appreciated!

Was this chick hatched in an incubator? Has it ever eaten or drunk anything yet? We need more information. It looks like a weak chick that has hatched from these pictures. Maybe try to get it to drink by dipping it's beak into water, and give a drop of Polyvisol baby vitamins without iron.

Yes I forgot to ask how old?

He's actually 3 weeks old. He's a mess from hand feeding. He is lethargic-going on day 2. He can lift his head somewhat, but no strength to stand. He is definitely on the small side, but a very active chick coming in to this. He has been in with other chicks who are slightly larger than him. Like I said, it's my friend's chick and I cared for him while she was a work:) Thanks for your responses!

The crop to the best of my knowledge is more in the chest, not the throat. It looks to me like this poor little one has been beat on by the bigger chicks. Look, I'm taking a stab here but stop the ACV, he doesn't need it. What he needs is some vitamins with probiotics to help build him up again. If he won't drink by himself, you may need to put drop after drop on his beak until he will do so on his own. There are some BYCers who do tube feeding but I have never done it and really would hesitate with one this small even if I had. I don't think you need the olive oil either. Using a syringe to feed gives me pause, if you don't get it in the right place he could aspirate and get pnuemonia. There may be things going on here not seen yet, and I hesitate to say anymore than I have since I don't know all of the symptoms or what the others died from. Need to know what you are feeding and anything else, no matter how far off the wall it may seem. Something is wrong here but what I don't know.

Thanks for the reply. I am using a curved needle-nosed syringe, and he willfully drinks the droplets off the end. One at a time & slowly. Would you use yogurt or probiotics in powder form? This one is stumping me also:( My friend is feeding a standard chick starter feed from TSC. Not sure of the name brand, possibly Purina.

For the chick starter, I hope it's Purina and not the Dumor brand. Please use a probiotic, he doesn't need the calcium in the yogurt. If the syringe is working well and you have the time to do all the feedings, I'd say continue the way you have been. If there isn't something genetically wrong with the little mite, he should perk up fairly quick and feed on his own. I would still offer the vitamins and probiotics for a while afterwards. Let him get built up well before he's turned back to the mix of chickens. If he is still alive and doing well in a few days, You could try mixing a good chick starter into the water and offering that to him. By then his stomach should be ready to start having some solids and this will really help get him up and moving. Just think thin gruel that can be fed with the syringe you're using. Good luck! Please keep this thread up to date as well.
