I had to help yet another chick out yesterday. No probs incubating this time ... just one MONSTER huge chick (for the egg ... it was a serama mutt). I couldn't believe all that chick came out of that tiny egg ... and yes ... I am hatching pullet eggs. All but her first egg developed. This is egg number 5 that she laid and the 3rd egg to hatch (one quit sometime between day 17 when I moved to the hatcher and actual hatch ... didn't open to see why ... probably too big). I had to help chick #2 also, but I waited to long. I did have humidity problems with him and he was literally glued to the shell ... I had a devil of a time hatching him. I should have helped him sooner, but waited about 28 hours after the pip since I could see him trying and he didn't seem to be weakening. He is still struggling at 4 days old. He is very sleepy and hardly eats or drinks.

The point of my ramblings is that it doesn't do the poor chick any good to wait too long ... BUT ... if you help too early the chick may not even need help and it is far too easy to kill a chick. Thus far I have been very LUCKY in that the chicks I have helped have been more than ready. All the blood was gone from the membrane (or they would have been wrapped and put back in the hatcher for awhile) and the yolks were completely absorbed.

I'll quit rambling now. I'm sorry ... I do tend to get carried away

I don't want to argue about this, but chicks being to large to hatch is NOT normal. If you have too many like this something is wrong. The only time I think this would happen is if possibly you are hatching pullet eggs. Chicks are normally very tight fitting in the shell. They need to be able to get traction to move.

sorry, should have been more specific

. I have had pullet eggs sent to me twice and this is what I was referring to. Been crazy weekend, sorry for the confusion. Since she said they were their first eggs I just assumed they were pullet eggs.
