Need Help ! Baby chick having trouble hatching.

I'm so thankful kountrygirl was there for you. Thanks kountrygirl for your great assistance in guiding hillbilly through a scary experience. So glad all went well. I suspect the chick will be fine. Any chance of giving it back to Momma later?

I was wondering that as well. Glad I could help. Sumi and Jeremy helped me assist a couple months ago. I have only done it maybe 4 times, and I know how nerve racking it can be.

Hi,
A little while ago, I went to check on the little chick, it had taken a little water earlier. Looks like it has developed a prolapse

and I know that's not good. Is there anything I can do? It looks like it wants to live, but I don't know what to do now. I was hoping to return it to it's mama tomorrow or Monday, now it seems like that won't be happening. Could it be from straining for so long to get out?? I know older hens have that sometimes, I had that happen, but we couldn't get it to stay in. We lost her. Looks like we may lose our chick, unless one of you knows of a way to remedy this. Been using witch hazel, but nothing. Any hope?? Kathy? Countrygirl?

I've not heard of a chick developing a prolapse. Just keep it warm, it really does not need to eat or drink for a couple of days. The newly hatched chicks just lay and sleep--they don't get on their feet for 12 or so hours and can't walk well until 24. How old is the chick now, isn't it just a few hours old? I have a hunch it will be fine, sometimes their butts look "swollen" Try not to worry--keeping it warm is the most important thing right now--but be careful if using heat lamp--don't put it right under it because they are not steady enough to get away if too hot. Good luck and keep us posted. Kathy

Hi Kathy,
There is what looks like intestines outside of it's butt. Yes, it's just a couple of hours old, and I keep praying it makes it. But this is like a red sac looking thing. I don't know what it is. I'm keeping him inside of a little box with a heating pad, the heat lamp is with the mama and chicks out in the shed where we had to move her so our other hens would quit bothering her. Anyway, I don't know what this thing is, but I hope it goes back in.

Here is a thread about prolapse in a chick: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/857614/help-prolapsed-vent-chick

Hickabilly some chicks have a big blop in the shell or attached to their butts--it is just junk from the incubation process. I've had chicks with a little red thread hanging out their butts with the blop attached. If it is not bleeding I think that's what it is. I've also had chicks bleed a drop or two from the rear--no one died. I think you will be fine. Is there any chance you could take a pic of it. Just don't pull it off.

Ok ladies, here is the picture, what do you think?? It looks like it wants to get up, but can't seem to, Don't know if that will improve over time if he survives. Are they intestines??
