not an immediate threat to the chickens, but could be... i noticed this guy in the window of a dead camper we're planning on tearing apart and rebuilding. (long story)

here's pics. sorry they're grainy looking, the windows on the old camper are dirty. guesstimate it to be 3-4' long. it struck at me (hit the glass), which is why the jaw's crooked, on the front-on shot. and the eye lenses look to be a bit milky, which usually signified getting ready to shed with my pet snakes i had.

oh and i don't think it's a black snake (black rat snake), since they have checkerboard bellies...

hm... I am thinking... snake stew...
uh... good idea. come and collect it, you can have it to make your stew...

thanks for the link... it's not a cottonmouth, according to the pics. the head is shaped wrong, for one, color for another...

ok it appears that i was wrong (thankfully)... it IS a black rat snake (aka easter rat snake)...
pic found at the link given above...

Definitely a Black Rat Snake. The strange patterning on the belly, as well as the "milky blue" eyes mean that he's "in shed", so to speak. He's getting ready to shed his skin :) As the snake gets closer and closer to shedding its skin, it becomes more and more drab in coloration and the eyes become more and more cloudy. Right before shedding, their eyes are clouded over to the point that they are pretty much completely blind. From the picture, it looks like he'll probably be shedding within a day or so. He may also be unusually defensive at this point. You'd be pretty scared too if you were blind and a big predator suddenly appeared in front of you
