First, take HIM shopping, and pay attention to his wants. If he want the $5K Armani dress shirt, draw the line,

but if he selects the store brand black shirt over the store brand white, get it for him. And if he prefers the white or a grey or ... let him make that decision. He does need a tie. Tell him that if when he gets there, none of the other guys are wearing one, he can take it off, but he needs to start out in one, And once again, let him make the selection. I would suggest when shopping that one of you wear or take something that is a dark purple so you can verify that the clothes selected do not clash with his date's dress.

If his friends are going to the dance, check with their moms as to whether they are wearing sports coats or not; I suppose you can check on ties, too. Or if you are on friendly terms with some of the school staff, call and ask them.

Now see Im gonna say polo shirt and the nice pants & shoes. No reason to go over board for home coming. Now a semi formal yes, but not homecoming.

Oh God, no polo shirt please! Dark slacks and shoes, silver-grey dress shirt, possibly a vest as well. It's not the occasion for a tux, but dress him nice! INCIDENTALLY, I DID buy a lavender dress shirt for the husband recently. He wore it to his grandfather's funeral with a black suit and he looked phenomenal! Of course he did catch hell from other males in his family

I vote for the black slacks & jacket with the dark purple shirt.

Definitely Deep Purple shirt...white would stand out and lavendar, as much as I love it...it poses an ick factor in this case. Blk pants and jacket, if tie becomes a choice...blk again...Definitely blk socks and shoes. Homecoming is no different in the eyes of a teen than any other dance and no way should he miss out...but JC Penney's offers every color of the rainbow of shirts, as does Sears. POLO....

There are times for polo shirts; this is not one. He needs to be dressed at the same level of formality of the other guys there, or he will be uncomfortable. Yes, pics are a must.

If he doesnt want to wear a tie, a dark purple dress shirt (maybe white or a silvery gray... depends on the dress) would be the best option I think. We must see pics!!
