NEED Sci-Fi titles

There are a whoooole ton of Dragonrider books. It's a combination of sci-fi and fantasy. A colony of people from Earth take their ship and settle on a planet called Pern. There they find miniature dragons, which they name firelizards. A parasite that falls from the nearby Red Star eats away anything and everything that isn't metal; human flesh and bone included. The people of Pern witness the firelizards torching the parasite, which they dub "thread", and decided to genetically engineer larger version of the firelizards; dragons. When the dragons hatch, they imprint to a single person. They are bonded, sharing a telepathic connection with one another, and that person becomes their rider. Until death do they part.

I started off with some of the smaller books in the series, Dragon Song, Dragon Singer and Dragon Drums. I really enjoyed them. You should read these before you read/listen to The Master Harper of Pern. You will appreciate the Master Harper all that much more. I remember actually crying when I read the Master Harper book.

Also read: Dragon Flight, Dragon Quest, and one of my personal favorites, The White Dragon.

I've only mentioned a few of the entire series. Anne McCaffrey wrote the original Pern books. Her son has taken over writing the stories now that she has gotten quite up there in age.

Science fiction is based on real/or seemingly possible futuristic science and technology. No magic (wizards, etc.) is involved, although aliens with mind-to-mind communication or other psychic powers are pretty common.

Fantasy... well, anything goes, really. Magic, wizards, etc.

They corrupted me!

Anything by Bujold, Vorkosigan for sci-fi, Chalion for fantasy
David Brin's (wrote the Postman)other books especially the Uplift series
Holly Lisle's Valor series
Jumper by Steven Gould (way better than the movie, classic revenge fantasies fulfilled)
Robin Hobb's Assasin, Liveship and Golden Fool series for fantasy
Lynn Flewelling for fantasy
S. M. Sterling for alternate history, I Like the Sea of Time ones in particular. the guy is somewhat obsessed with military history, so the battle scenes can get kinda long.
Greg Bear for very involved, technical science fiction
Marc Budz's Clade books
Sheri Tepper for sci-fi with a not terribly subtle environmental message, good reads nonetheless
Madness Season by C. S. Friedman
William Dietz: science fiction with a strong military flavor (the Foriegn Legion in the far future)

I rarely read, I do not have books spilling off my bedside table, I do not have book shelves in every room but the bathrooms, I never double stack books, they don't know my name at the used bookstore, I can quit at anytime and I never ever never lie..........

Fantasy, ugghhh.... Dang you Harry Potter! (shaking fist)

How about some good ol' Asimov or Heinlein? There is an annual collection that has been published since the early 80's called The Year's Best Science Fiction. There is always a wide variety of material there.

Chicabee...

I'm not much of a sci-fi fan because it's hard to sift through the multitude of garbage out there but I do have a title for you...

Hyperion by Dan Simmons (won the Hugo award for this book). Of course, you also have to read the companion conclusion novel, The Fall of Hyperion, but by then you'll be hooked.

It starts off a little slow but it is the best science fiction I have ever read. Is has a little bit of everything and will also probably make you cry like a baby.

Excellent, excellent read.

OH WAIT!!!! I just remembered Diana Galbaldon - the time travel novels. OHMYGOSH they are sooooo good and addicting. there are like 5-6 books in the series and each one is really long, but you cannot put them down. I think the first one is Dragonfly In Amber.
