Hi all,
I need your help!!!!
I have 2 hens (mother and daughter) that went broody a week apart. I got some fertilised eggs. Mother hen sat on 10 eggs ans hatched all 10 (2 weeks old). She's a awesome mum but daughter is out of control... she hatched 4 out of 10 eggs 4 days ago. Shes nasty towards me and anything near her which i understand as she is protecting her babies.. but the issue is i refill food and water daily sometimes twice a day to all my chickidees.. she is just tipping over food filling feeders with wood shavings (bedding). Scratchering constantly.... i have tried changing bedding to hay does the same thing and chicks getting tangled in it. This morning when i tried feeding her she tried attacking me then turned to her baby and pecked it.. please help!! Can i move babies to hens mother with her babies although a little older?
HELP

It sounds to me like you have this broody in a small area. What are the dimensions of her space? You might try putting her in with the other broody, and see how it goes, however, I anticipate that all chaos might ensue. Tell us more about your set up, and we might be able to give you some concrete advice.

Its about 6 feet by 2 feet wide. I firstly thought this so i moved her to this pen as she was in one a little smaller but still same reaction

Sounds to me that she loves her babies and will protect them. Can you move the water away from the shavings? As for the food she is trying to show her babies how and what to eat... I had a hen that would peck the food to little tiny bits for her babies. You could also try to turn a cardboard box upside down and cut out a front section so she and her babies can go in for protection/privacy.

The pen shes in has 2 levels she wont take babies up the top at all.. i am having to check on them hourly. Babies arent getting enough food and water as she tips them or fills them. When i refill they run to the food n water

Hang the water from a chain at chick chest level. You might need to do the same with their food also. Or make them a creep feeder: Put a wire cage around their feeder that they can walk through, but it will exclude Mama.

Some broody hens do A LOT of scratching as they're very eager to show their chicks what to eat. Chick-sized feeders and waterers don't work well when you have a broody. Use adult-sized feeders and waterers, as they're much less likely to tip over.

Keep each set of chicks with their own mom, as it probably wouldn't be wise to mix them together considering how protective the daughter hen is.

I realize you're concerned at this time with a high-strung, probably inexperienced broody, but have you give any thought to where sixteen (if they all survive) chickens are going to live? Your darling little coop is adequate for four max.

As the chicks grow, and remember, they double in size each week, they will need more space, and in three months, you will have sixteen nearly full-size chickens. Overcrowding causes tremendous stress. You won't be able to deal with it unless you plan on eating all the extra chickens.

Yes i am quite aware of where 14 chicks and 2 mothers will sleep once they grow. I actually have 5 other hens which are in a large coop. I seperated the 2 broody hens from the rest until chicks are more independent. This is not my first time raising chicks. But is my first time with a hen which is out if control. I am aware these chicks will grow. I already have homes for half the chicks when ready to leave there mothers. Coops aren't the issue. I am more concerned on the safety of the 4 chicks and weather i should remove them from there inexperience mother or they will possible stave if mother has her way.
