Need some encouragement please

Hi @Engine823 I'm sorry your having trouble.

That's a bit odd that the vet can't prescribe antibiotics for chickens?
He didn't lance the wound either - any photos of the wound?

You can try the Tylan50 to see if there is improvement since that's what you have available. Dosage for injectable Tylan50 is 1cc or ml per 5lbs of weight, given orally or by injection 2X per day for 5days. ( ((If your hen weighs 4lbs., give her .80cc or ml 2times a day for 5days)))

Do the best you can to keep her hydrated. If the wound is very large, then keeping her separated may be in order if she is being picked at ( dog kennel in the run works well for this).
Supposedly this vet went to school specifically for chickens. Don't know why but he said he couldn't prescribe a chicken antibiotics anymore due to the usda. He didn't do anything but inspect her.
No other vets anywhere around will look at a chicken. I drove an hour and a half to see this vet.
I don't have any pictures of the spot on her back but I will take some tomorrow.
There are so many recommendations for tylan dosages that my head is spinning. I researched and decided on 1 CC per day, so you say twice a day?
Also I am not sure it's even an abscess for sure or a tumor or what?
This sucks! Wish I could do more for her

You can buy injectible penicillin at farm supply stores in the horse/cattle/goat department.
I saw it last week on the shelf at a southern states store.
I do not know what the dosage would be for poultry but I know there are plenty of helpful people on this site that can guide you. You would need to buy a few syringes and perhaps needles as well. They are available at farm supply stores individually for less than $1.
Another option is to use human amoxicillin if you have any leftovers or know someone who does.
Again check with helpful, knowledgeable people here for dosages.
It would be based on the chickens weight.

Children's antibiotics are easiest because they are liquid and can be given orally with the enclosed measuring dropper.

Capsules can be emptied onto a piece of wax paper and the powder can be divided as carefully as possible by eye with a clean knife blade into small piles and mixed with water or food for oral administration.
Just don't cough or sneeze,
You'll lose it all over the counter!
Tablets can be cut into small pieces, a bit hidden in half a grape or some other tasty morsel. Or you could crush them, then mix with a tiny amount of water ( to administer orally)
Or mix with small amount of food that is tasty to your chicken. ( like yogurt )
So there. You have a few options to mull over tonight!

I will try anything at this point.
Worried now that I may be using the wrong antibiotic. Someone said earlier in a post that tylan was for breathing issues. I thought an antibiotic was good for any infection. I'm glad your hen is doing so good!
