Need some encouragement please

You are awesome!
This will help the infection and heal it!
My Izzy girl smelled like death, the vet said she was decaying from the inside out. She wouldnt have made it even a couple more hours if God would not have intervened. The vet taught me how to do this, so I could bring her home.

Well I need to know. Is everyones opinion that the tylan 50 needs to be given twice a day for 5 days instead of once a day?
Also if I do that won't her breast get super sore? I heard IM is the best way to give tylan. Also if I start giving it twice a day what about the two days I have already given it once a day?

Friends I'm heading to bed. Please continue to post advice so I can check it in the morning. I will try and post photos of the place on her back tomorrow.
Please let me know about the correct tylan dosage, ( twice or once a day 1 CC )?? And if I switch to twice what to do about the two days she has already had once a day injections??
And thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. My animals I have are all pampered the best that I can! I care for them all and I let them know every day.

Photos may help. Determining whether it's an abscess that can be drained would be a good idea. If there is pus, then getting it cleaned out will help. If it's a tumor, then it would be best to leave it be. Also knowing where it's located can help as well - could it be an impacted oil gland?

I agree - dosing can be all over the place for injectable Tylan50. It has a wide range and can be frustrating to know how to figure out your dosage.
Page914 of the Plumbs Veterinary Drug Handbook ----Tylan50 dosage at 10-40mg per Kg 2-3 times a day.
Finding that "happy medium" I would go with 20mg per kg 2times per day. Technically for your 4lb. hen it would be .7272727272cc or ml, but since Tylan50 has such a large dosage range and seems to be well tolerated, rounding up to .80 for ease of measurement would be o.k.

Here's a thread that has a link to the handbook - you can download it yourself:

fwiw - Penicillin can be found at most feed store like Tractor Supply in the refrigerated section. Injectables are still avialable, so if she doesn't improve with the Tylan50, then that may be your next step.

Since she is weak - provide her with some poultry vitamins and extra protein like egg, tuna or meat in addition to her normal feed. Marek's is a concern, and it can cause tumors on the body, but I would think you would find more than just one. It could be from a wound that just festered.

Keep us posted and we look forward to your photos - load us up with them if you can - different angles and a couple that shows the whole hen so we can see where it's located too.

An abcess can feel hard, esp near edges. Get your fingers around it and lift softly to feel under and around it. If it feels more like a ball (not necessarily round) it could be more a tumor. Also an abcess going on this amount of days would be warm in your fingers, smell etc. If it feels like part of it is mushy or softer than the rest of it. It needs to be drained, washed with something for poultry wounds, and repeatedly cleaned for a few days. Penicillin or something similar will be needed. An abcess left untended may lead to blood poisoning. I saw hundreds working w a vet. I always found them facinating to clean and care for because they can be so different every time. I would think though a vet would have thought of that upon looking at it. Call them and ask if they considered this. It may ease your questions. If he is sure it was a tumor, well I am sorry either way

This page says that Tylan is for bacterial infections including respiratory illnesses.

Here are some links that might help with the current rules on veterinarians prescribing antibiotics. I think your vet isn't up on the rules.

I once had a large abscess on the back of my upper thigh from a black widow bite. It was a huge round ball under my skin. It had to be drained by the doctor and then I had to squeeze it out myself several times a day. Not fun, but it helped a lot.

I wish you well on the treatment of your girl Emily. :hugs

I am thinking loving healing thoughts for you and Emily! She is just adorable! You mentioned you wouldn't be able to drain it and @HeyHey mention epsom salt soak. I agree this might be helpful, and possibly soften the scab to make squeezing it out easier, if it is indeed an abscess. Tjere is lots to work with here. I hope she feelsbetter soon and you are ableto help her! Hugs.
