I have 6 duck eggs due to hatch on the 30th. Tonight, 2 of them are wobbling! I candled them and I see little beaks in the air sacks.
Are these guys going to hatch early? This is my first time with duck eggs.
Hennypenny-I'm sorry that happened to you. I don't know about the silkie embryo, but I left a silkie egg with bacterial growth in with my others because I could see a dark mass that wasn't moving much, but I still thought it might have been a chick- when I finally took it out- no movement or veining for a week, there was a hairline crack. The membrane inside was all swollen. It was probably about to explode, which could have jeopardized the other eggs- that would have been horrible. I almost didn't take it out because I was afraid there might be a late chick inside. I guess what I'm saying is, you can only do your best.
JustMandy - I have 6 more silkies (I think) in the bator. I am hoping for a heathly successful hatch. Last night a big storm came through. Power was off for 8 hours! I was at my dad's house when it went off but I drove home to check my eggs. Our power was off too so I put a blanket over them (temp was down to 94). Then I drove back to my dads all down & out about my eggs and my husband was saving the day and pulling out the generator! So we had the generator hooked up and running within an hour and a half of the power going down. The power was out for 8 hours and at 5:30 am it came back on just as we were down to our last bit of gas for the generator - whew!
Tonight starts lockdown! I dont see any rocking and rolling in the eggs. My LG had alot of temp fluctuations BUT I can see movement in the eggs. SO NERVOUS!
Question: I see where someone took a rail out of their turner in the pictures above. Can I do that? Leave just one or two rows in the turner for the eggs that are behind and put the others on the mesh to hatch? That would be nice because I have a staggered hatch.
Today is day 20 for me. Went out to check on my broody hen and give her some food and sunflower seeds this morning. As soon as she stood up, I heard a flurry of peeping! All of the egg shells are still totally intact, but the little ones are starting to make some noise. I heard more than one peep, so I hope all four eggs are on board! I can't wait to see how they are doing when I get home from work!
I candled Sunday night and will go into lock down on Wednesday but will still have to open to turn three eggs that I put in there late and to put more water in to keep the humidity up to around 70% if it will stay there.
My partner in Chicken Math locked down a dozen eggs the day before yesterday; one has hatched, and there are three more with pips! Two are the Leghorns we need for our laying flock, and I hope they're both hens. I'm gnawing my nails to the elbow today!
