Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

If I have shipped eggs, I candle before they go into the incubator to check for cracks. People say that you can candle between days 7 and 10 to check for development....I prefer closer to day 10. Then a lot of people candle again before lockdown to throw out any clear eggs at that point.

Hope that helps!

It does thank you. About day ten is when you should start seeing veins? Is this right?

You can start seeing veining around day 7. If you watch closely enough, you can see the little chick dancing around in the egg around then too.

Don't worry about it if you aren't exactly right on the time. Mother hen doesn't have a watch!

I have heard you want to make sure and get at least 3 turns a day in....I think you'll be fine!

About how big of a turn?

egg is 45 degrees from straight up and down, then when you turn it's 45 degrees the other way.....you'll be turning it around 90 degrees. Another option is that some automatic turners will roll the egg back and forth

Edited for an ignorant comment on my part!

is this with an egg turner or manually? because manually you don't have many options....unless there is something I'm missing,

Why don't you put the egg on the side? That is all I have been doing and most of my chicks are hatching just fine. But I have seen lots of pictures on here of people keeping them upright. What is the advantage/disadvantage of both?

You know, now that I think of it, some automatic turners just roll the egg. Also when they are in the nest they are on the side as well. I guess what I was thinking was that you don't want to turn them upside down. Sorry for the misinformation.

My auto turners turn in the method I described above.

Isn't the pointy side supposed to be pointed downward? How you are supposed to do this without the turner evades me though

Some people do their eggs in egg cartons. So they cut the bottom out of each egg holder for air circulation and then put the eggs in the carton point side down. I don't use this method but many swear by it. If you opt to lay yours on the side and have to turn them manually...you are suppose to mark one side X and one side O and alternate which is up. I have a auto turner on my brinsea incubator and it simply rocks side to side.

I do my eggs on there side and not in a carton at all. I had a 11/13 hatch the first time out. I try to do as much as I can as natural as I can and a chicken don't use a carton to put her eggs in while she is sitting on them so why should I.
