Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

Well I had my first real dissapointment with shipped eggs yesterday. My duck eggs took 6 days to reach me. I ordered 8 eggs, Pekin & Indian Runner. I received an e-mail when they were shipped that said there were extras and that I would receive 16 eggs total. I was so excited. Well a small priority box arrived yesterday. I opened it up and inside was a carton for 18 eggs cut in half and taped up with 9 eggs inside.

The eggs were wrapped in paper towels and the egg carton bubble wrapped and taped up and surrounded by foam packing peanuts. I noticed there didnt seem to be enough peanuts when I picked the box up because the contents had room to move around in the box. Well the smell hit me first. I knew some were broken. The carton wasn't the foam kind but the cardboard one and it was wet. I opened up the carton and found 3 busted eggs. 6 appeared to be intact but I had to get all the goo off of them before I could be sure. I found one more that was cracked. It was missing a chunk out of the shell but amazingly it didnt bust. So I have 5 eggs but I am not very hopeful for them. They spent a long time in shipping and were covered in smelly egg goop. I had to rinse them off. I read that you need to have the water just a little warmer than the egg so I rinsed them in lukewarm water. I figure at this point the washing couldnt hurt much.

I am not sure what I should do. I am not mad, just confused. I am not sure why I received 9 when the e-mail said I would be receiving 16. I didn't pay alot for them. I won the auction for $5 plus $11 shipping. Maybe my order was mixed up with someone else's? I am disappointed with the broken eggs and will pay to have them shipped again. I guess I need to e-mail them to find out what happened. My 5 year old was so upset. She said "Momma I really wanted baby ducks, what if we just go buy some". I hope at least 2 of the 5 develop.

Yes, regular mail sent in a Priority box. I sent them a message about what happened. I will wait and see what they want to do.

This is why the people that ship don't want to be respsponsible for their eggs once they leave them at the P.O.! I am so sorry. I've had eggs take forever in the past, and just recently..but at least they didn't look like that! I did have some sent that took only 3 days, but the box was dented. I thought right away..oh oh. Sure enough one was broken. Only one broken, but only two became viable. Then only had one that was ok for a while, then it quit. So, nothing from that hatch. I let her know how the eggs were once I candled..only two, she just said sorry, hope the two hatch. I have had different things happen in others though. One sent me more for the cost of shipping. Another sent me some..said let's wait and see what happens with the hatch. I got 4 to hatch. E-mailed her, and she said, don't worry about it, just glad I have a happy customer. So, you never know, doesn't hurt to let them know what has happened, and if you can get a picture of That to them, maybe it will help. Cost of shipping at least.

If anyone remembers I had two eggs that were to hatch today and they both just did, so that now gives me a total of 9 chick all together. 4 of the first 11 were not mine and they have gone to there home. I have 9 that are due to hatch on the 22 of May. At that time I will be done unless I get some eggs that are not from my rooster. I am getting to not like him for he is getting mean, but that is a dominique for you. I would like to get some breeds that are friendly.

Well, I couldn't help myself.....

When I opened the incubator to add water, it smelled, so I thought I had better check my eggs....3 were stuck, so I removed 2 welsummer and did the best I could to clean off a lavender orpington. I am hoping it just got something on it, rather than it seeping.

While I was there, I went ahead and candled the delaware eggs and it looks like I have 5 that are developing, 3 that have blood rings, and 4 that looked clear. I am not giving up on the 4 because it is only day 6...but I am very happy with what I was able to see! Now, if the 21 other eggs would do as well.....
