Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

Stevenson..same breeder ey? Interesting. Maybe the other three are ok. Let's hope so. Are they pretty good sized eggs? Man I hope you get at least a couple!
What are your others 5 due on Fri/Sat?

fife..let us know when that first pip happens. Can't remember what you have in either!?

4-H...lucky you, is it true that the Jerseys take a while to mature because of their size? I've considered getting some. Waiting is no problem if they are good egg layers..of big eggs...and I have others laying in the meantime.

cynthia....I have no problem getting eggs from my JG hens. They either lay every day or every other day. They lay large brown eggs even during the winter. A pullet will start laying around the same time other breeds start @ 6 months but they fill out there body fuller as they age.

I HAVE FLUFFY BUTTS!!

No pips as of bedtime last night. Seven beautiful babies by lunchtime today! 4- polish, 2- ameraucanas, 1 silver laced wyndotte. I have one more wyndotte in the homemade incubator that pipped this morning but nothing else yet. Should I put it in with the others? Mamma is still sitting on two eggs. Should I take one hatchling and put it in with the egg until it hatches(hopefully). Or, should I just leave it alone and see what happens? The solo egg was left out of the nest two nights ago and was quite cold when I found it before I went to bed. I put it in the bator and crossed my fingers. I was totally shocked when my husband realized it had pipped.

This is my very first hatch and I am just overjoyed. All the checking and fretting and moving the other hen off the nest, then putting all the eggs back under Little Bitty(the mama). I can't believe they are really finally here!! Little Bitty, so named because she was the tiniest weakest baby we had, almost died twice and my awesome hubby brought her back from the brink. Now one year later she's big and healthy and has a beautiful little brood of her own. Isn't life wonderful? Isn't God just amazing!

Congrats to everyone on your new fluffy butts!!
Cynthia- Thanks for the eggcellent pics. What little cutties!

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting. Just hang in there!

Yes, I don't necessarily think it's the breeder's eggs. I think it's the transport. She did everything right...eggs were a good size, packing was great, fresh eggs...just bad luck I guess.

The 5 remaining eggs are the ones that were in the mail for 5 days! Two of them have their air cells on the side of the egg....will be interesting to see if they make it. I have 4 Barnevelder and 1 Lavender Orpington due Fri/Sat.

Cynthia...I have 21 BBS Jersey Giants in the incubator...half from Wynette and half Maria Hall. Pretty darn excited. I never get early pips...always seems to happen on day 21 and day 22!

Hi,
I have eggs on day 19 today and have 3 pips already. I can never figure out why either.
I use a Hovabator 1588, monitor the temp with a Brinsea spot check and it's always 99.2 to 99.7F. I use 2 1588's and have hatched a couple hundred eggs already this year and always have a 1 or 2 "early birds" with every hatch.
Sometimes wonder if the heat from the turner motor may have something to do with it.

Good luck on every ones hatch

Congrats! What a cute name for your hen. And, what a great husband to be able to do that! And yes, God is amazing.

I can't answer any questions when it comes to broody hens. I can suggest that you just leave your one little egg in the bator, all by itself. The other baby has been out of the bator, it would probably be too warm, and humid for it now. The one little egg is on it's own. It may make it yet. Cold and pipped... hmmm...

So sorry about your baby..that had to be hard to see. I had one that had been hatched..for 5 hrs..and I went to find in gone. That was a first. It seemed to be doing fine?
Love your bator! What is it?? Size too??

This was a wine fridge I got from Craigslist. Apparently the cooling units go out regularly. It is a 6 bottle size, about 2 cubic feet.

I took out the cooling unit and replaced it with a light fixture, then added the thermostat and fan inside. I also drilled a hole in the top that holds the rubber tube that brings in water or helps regulate the humidity.

The baskets were fashioned from hardware cloth onto the shelves, but I think I am going to change the baskets to use a coated metal and higher sided for the top floor.

Sure! Your hatch and mine should be coming out about the same time.
Congrats to all of you with cute chickies and cheers for those that have "pips'. Is it just me or do you all feel until that first one pips, zips and hatches....that maybe something went dreadfully wrong and you won't get any??? I'm always relieved one the first one is out.
