Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

1 hatched! 4 pips!!!!!!!!!!!

I have trouble with tech stuff on the computer. It takes TIME and patience...which I'm short on temporarily. However...I will take pictures when they have all hatched and will try to post. Sometimes I can post pics and sometimes I give up. I THINK I have 4 hatched now...it is sooooo crowded and they are on top of unhatched eggs and each other...I don't see how they can survive all squished in like that. Usually I take some out and the empty eggshells during the hatch but since I'm vaccinating this time...I was told NOT to take any out til the hatch was done. Then vaccinate and as I finish one...put into the brooder. I hope I can hold out....they are really squished. It would be really upsetting to have a healthy chick hatch and then be smothered to death by the other chicks!

Maybe you can make sure they have extra air getting in someway? The humidity will probably stay up with all those chicks hatching. loll.

Good for you..lots of babies.

Photos? I'm slow at this tech stuff. Someone told me how to post pics from photo bucket. Large pictures, but at least I can do it!
Take your pictures, download them where you want them, go to photobucket and browse, download the ones you want, then put arrow on pic you want, a yellow box will pull up below it, go to the bottom choice, click, it will say copied..then come back on here...paste. Pretty easy, probably a long way around, but I got that one for some reason. lol..
Hope to see some pictures soon!

5 hatched and they ARE beautiful! I have another 4 or 5 pipped but with chicks laying on half the eggs hard to tell for sure ..... these were due on the evening of the 26 and I can't believe how long it is taking this round! I have the air vent opened all the way and my humidity goes up to 70-75 when one first hatches out but then goes back down to 65-66 RH so not an issue.
Did Stevenson get any of his to hatch??

I was wondering the same thing fife..what's going on Stevenson?? Any hatching? I sure hope so, you've had some bad luck getting more Delawares.
What about the Barnevelder...I kept one of mine that I hatched about a month and a half ago...man, are they known for slow maturing? This baby is still so small, where as a barred rock that I kept, and is only a couple of weeks older is a lot bigger.

Oh, and Stevenson, have a question about the Delewares. Do they get real big..all of them. I got one from a lady that needed to thin out her flock..it's a talker too, so too noisy for her, but this bird is huge! 1 yr. old. She lays double yolkers often according to the lady. I should post a picture of Marshmallow.

The one I kept and posted a picture of before, is getting pretty large herself..and is starting to drop a soft shelled/yolk on the ground, so starting to lay early! She is only 17 weeks. Hopefully, she will eat the oyster shell that I put out, and her egg shells will get hard soon.
Anyway, hope you've had some luck?!

Nope. No luck. I guess the egg that exploded egg ruined my hatch. All 4 of the Delaware were fully developed (1 tried to hatch, but didn't get past the pipping stage). The 4 barnevelders and one lavender orpington are due today...but no pipping...so I am assuming they aren't going to make it either.

Honestly, I am still learning the delaware breed. I have 18 that are 7 weeks old. Here is what the 1998 SOP says though:

Standard Weights:
"Cock....8 1/2lbs, Hen....6 1/2lbs, cockerel.... 7 1/2lbs, pullet.... 5 1/2lbs"

Guess I spoke too soon. I have a pip on one of the barnevelders. The air cell on this one is on the side, so I had to put the egg in a partial carton with the egg cell up...hope it works
