I was wondering the same thing fife..what's going on Stevenson?? Any hatching? I sure hope so, you've had some bad luck getting more Delawares.
What about the Barnevelder...I kept one of mine that I hatched about a month and a half ago...man, are they known for slow maturing? This baby is still so small, where as a barred rock that I kept, and is only a couple of weeks older is a lot bigger.
Oh, and Stevenson, have a question about the Delewares. Do they get real big..all of them. I got one from a lady that needed to thin out her flock..it's a talker too, so too noisy for her, but this bird is huge! 1 yr. old. She lays double yolkers often according to the lady. I should post a picture of Marshmallow.
The one I kept and posted a picture of before, is getting pretty large herself..and is starting to drop a soft shelled/yolk on the ground, so starting to lay early! She is only 17 weeks. Hopefully, she will eat the oyster shell that I put out, and her egg shells will get hard soon.
Anyway, hope you've had some luck?!
Nope. No luck. I guess the egg that exploded egg ruined my hatch. All 4 of the Delaware were fully developed (1 tried to hatch, but didn't get past the pipping stage). The 4 barnevelders and one lavender orpington are due today...but no pipping...so I am assuming they aren't going to make it either.
Honestly, I am still learning the delaware breed. I have 18 that are 7 weeks old. Here is what the 1998 SOP says though:
Standard Weights:
"Cock....8 1/2lbs, Hen....6 1/2lbs, cockerel.... 7 1/2lbs, pullet.... 5 1/2lbs"
