Wikipedia has an article about using maggots for cleaning wounds in the medical field because they eat the old dead tissue, leaving the live tissue alone.

Thank you so much for your answers, I will be cleaning him up here in a few mintures and will let ya know how it goes.

Maggots are the larvae of flies so depending on the type of fly that laid the eggs, they indeed can and will eat live flesh...the screw worm is one such type. Albeit, the majority of maggots do only ingest dead flesh by secreting an enzyme (?) that breaks it down into something that they can ingest.

Since screw worms LOVE livestock of all varieties. I would not trust myself to be able to identify the type of of maggot I was dealing with and would get rid of them ASAP... ick. ick. ick.

From All About Worms :

While maggots are considered gross and dirty, they are commonly used in the medical world to clean wounds! “Maggot therapyâ€? has been used in the medical world since ancient times and it is currently being used in medical centers throughout the United States and Europe. Also called “larval therapyâ€? and “Maggot Debridement Therapyâ€? (MDT), maggot therapy uses live, disinfected maggots to eat the dead tissue on non-healing skin or the soft tissue of humans and animals. The maggots do not touch the live tissue. During the process of eating away dead tissue, the maggots discharge powerful antibiotics, which help treat the wound.

we were posting at the same time.. screw worms in my experience are MUCH larger then typical maggots... i am not reccomending leaving them on just wanted point out that they do only eat dead/infected tissue...

LOL... Sorry about that.

Good point about maggot size for a bit of help Id-ing. I had a duck with maggots on her leg 2 summers ago and it was theee grossest thing I have ever seen. It looked like her whole leg was moving. The little critters were teeny tiny as they had just been born.

Guess I wont be needing breakfast this morning... ack

My dad said it was infected (probably still is) Let me know what you think.

He seems to be doing really well though, he was trying to bite while cleaning his wound so I know he is feeling better, he also started cleaning off his feathers (it was cute lol)

Those three things look like screwworm or bot fly larvae. Try gently pulling on them with a pair of tweezers. If you note movement, they are indeed parasites of some sort and should be removed. Good luck. The edge of the wound is surrounded with granulating tissue which is trying to heal the wound. That is a good thing.

Those three things do move, but only when he moves his neck I did touch them with a q-tip, but I will try and remove them.

Thank you for the help
