Hi everyone,

I need some help. I rec'd a new chicken today and she seems to have an impacted crop. She didn't seem to look well when he dropped her off, but I didn't say anything. I noticed something red in her poo and then later in better light, noticed that she has quite a large chest, the size of a baseball I guess. Right off the bat, she looked different than the rest of my girls. I felt it and it was definately hard, like a hardball. She is eating though, because she looks a little skinny. I was told that she has already had chicks, so she is older, and she has red around her eyes. Is that part of maturing in Ameracaunas? I guess what I am wondering is how to be sure it is impacted or sour crop? Do I rub her chest and smell her breath? If it is either one is the treatment the same? I read about several different ways: Oil down the throat (is there a particular way, someone said something about choking?), yogurt?, there are so many things!

Can someone help make is clear cut form me? Also, danger signs to look for? I have no idea how long this has been going on- Thanks!!

I don't think there are any clear-cut ways to diagnose chicken illnesses. It's a matter of experience, and we newbies are just too... new.

If it makes you feel any better, my chicken is sick too and I don't know what it is.

Make sure you keep this chicken away from your other chickens.

Renee
