Neighbor dog got loose, went after chickens

Its incredible how ignorant some people are, no?

The other thing is... she isn't a next door neighbor, she is next door but one, not only does the dog leave her 10 acres, it crosses another 5 to get to me

Ohhh, my dogs are inside most of the day but when they are out I take precautions to keep my chickens safe. She keeps warning me about coyotes and mountain lions... but never about her own dogs

We have a dog too, but she's an inside dog, and when she's outside, she's always on a leash. A dog is going to be a dog. My anger lies with the owner, and how he handled the whole thing. Not even a sorry, and the gall to lay all the blame on me for not keeping them penned up. I can't describe just how angry I am right now. Not just the 25ish eggs lost per month, but she was a pet we put lots of time and love into. He better hope he doesn't need any neighborly help from us...ever....

Sorry she is not back, I hope by some miracle she does turn up! Know exactly what you mean, my neighbor was like 'Oh it's chicken, I will get you another'. It's not really the $3 chick, it's the time, the socialization, the months you have raised them, the fact they have become your fluffy little friends and the fact that they lay eggs! Hope all works out well for you... obviously your neighbor just doesn't get it

Depending on your local laws, the neighbor owes the replacement cost of an identical bird. No $3 to buy a new chick. The number I hear most on the forum is $15 a bird or there abouts

Of those of you who have experienced dog attacks, did it effect egg production afterward? If so, for how long? I got a few eggs today, but I figure those are the ones that were already in production...not sure what to expect at this point...

after the attack 2 weeks ago they were off (not as many as usual) for 2 or 3 days, then back to normal.

it depends. sometimes, if they are scared really bad, it will effect it for a few days, even a week. Other times, not at all.

I actually have more loss of production if there are dogs just jumping on the run fence and scaring the birds. Possibly because the birds feel "trapped" and aren't able to run away?

If the dog steps foot on your property again, I'd advise you to gun 'im down, if you can. It'll just keep coming back for more. Neighbors will just have to deal with it: it's one dog's varmint life against the noble lives of many chickens.
