Neighbor has roosters...

Hey all, first post.. Not much of an introduction, but my neighbor behind me has chickens and roosters, and the roosters crow every morning at 430am..

Upon further investigation I looked into the laws for my city and what theyre doing is totally illegal.. First off I peeked through the fence and I see at least 10-12 chickens/roosters in a small 20x10 area (that is being generous). Law in my city states it must have 20k square feet and each much have 10 square feet.. Roosters are illegal all together..

I had a couple of choices, either approach the house, or speak to code enforcement. Without being "that neighbor", I went over there and politely told her that they crow at 430am, waking my house up and if she could do anything about it.. Now I know they have "anti crow collars" etc.. She told me in a prude way.. "Ill see what I can do". Doesnt seem too promising.

I will give it a couple of days, but if it isnt resolved I will have no choice but to call code enforcement.. First what she is doing is illegal with space etc, and second it is a nuisance. I just want some peace and quiet during the night.

I'd just go to code enforcement. Regardless of the rooster bothering you, the chickens aren't allowed on the lot.

i guess you get used to it, my neighbors have had roosters for as long as i can remember, and over the years the other neighbors have gotten more roosters. but the difference is that here it is legal.

in Japan, it is popular to own quail as pets and also for their eggs, because they cannot own chickens in some ordinances. maybe you can offer that as another option to your neighbor if their chickens get taken away. Female quail are a far less noisy alternative to chickens, but their eggs are smaller. cities will rarely crack down on quail because they do not put them in the same category of "poultry" as chickens. Americans seem to be less cooperative with their neighbors, so i doubt they will like that idea at all anyways.

I have a rooster and offered to get collars if he bothers my neighbors but so far nobody minds. In 40 years I cant say I've ever called city on anyone. Cops on under age drinking and violence sure, rooster no.
I cant really say what or how much something bothers you. I once stayed across from train tracks and people said "you'll get used to it." 3 years later we moved and I finally slept through the night.

You are going to create bad relations with neighbours you might have to live with for years & years & create a tit for tat situation that would be ongoing & stressful if you go to the law. People in cities learn to sleep through trucks, sirens, trains & buses ~ & frankly a rooster is a lot more pleasant to listen to. If it were me I'd just adjust to the rooster. The whole *peek through the fence* thing smacks of prying into what is none of your business & looking for a reason to create trouble.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Again the fact they have roosters, chickens, I dont mind. Its just that it keeps crowing at 430 am every night effecting my sleep as well as my roommates.

On top of that, the legalities of it. It was sad that she seemed disinterested in what I was saying.. The chickens really were in a tight space and there was a ton of them.
