My neighbor has decided to put piles of grass around his small trees, there was a fence there until a windstorm took it down. My chickens didn't go anywhere near his yard until he started piling up the grass. Now he says there's a leash law (there isn't anything stating anything other than cats and dogs that I can find) and that he's going to put leg snare traps near his trees. There is a law against knowingly causing animals injury and harm. My birds free range 90% of the day and the rest of the neighbors love my birds and enjoy them coming to visit on occasion. I cannot afford to put up a fence, nor fence in a bigger run for my birds. Yes I've tried giving them eggs, and it was after I gave them eggs 2 weeks ago that this started. He's just a jerk and finds complaint with anything and everything. I can't call the county until Tuesday. Maybe I'll have my other neighbor feed them sunflower seeds in the morning so they won't go up towards jerks place. I have 10 acres, its not like a have a small area, this one just happens to be one of the closest neighbors.

Hmmm him being a jerk or not, your birds are on his property, simple as that. Until you contain your birds, you'll have to worry about them. He has the right to do whatever he wants on HIS property. Sorry, but it is what it is.

I don't know what the law is in SC, but here, i don't think the law would be on your side. I agree that this neighbor is being pretty crabby about some chickens, but if he doesn't want them on his property, well, he has the right to be crabby. I think it's your responsibility to find some way to keep your chickens off his place.

I hope you're able to come to good solution and that your darlings don't get snared.

It's your responsibility to keep your chickens on your property......and off of his. If you can't fence them in you may have to think about re-homing them.

If i asked you to keep your animals off of MY property.. and you wer'nt respectful enough to do as i asked...
Then, ya.. i'd get rid of your chickens..one by one... until you got the hint.
What if he got a dog..and let it run in YOUR yard..and it killed all your birds?? How would YOU feel?
Think about it... be responsible for your animals. Keep them in YOUR yard...
I'm sure if he wanted chickens in his yard he'd go get his own...

Yes. Keep your chickens on your property, for their own safety and for the sake of your neighbors. SC law is the same as everywhere else, no animals, including poultry, at large. Your neighbor is crabby - and I don't blame him, I'd be ticked, too.

Karen -Why would you call the county? YOU are the one who will be reprimanded, perhaps fined! Find a way to contain the birds. Chicken wire even, to keep them on your property.

The law states he can confiscate them not harm them, wouldn't leg snares harm them? Yes its my responsibility to keep my birds over here, and until he started piling up the grass they stayed over here, it wasn't a problem. He didn't have a problem letting his kid let their dog bite my horse on my property through my fence. he got really nasty when I asked the kid not to let the dog bite my horse. Dogs run loose around here all the time its a risk that comes with living in the country. He has to cross my property to mow the grass on my side of his trees.... because of the way he put up his fence thats now a tree line, maybe I should just be nasty back and say he can't do that.

My question is and I didn't phrase it properly in the first post. Has anyone heard of a Leash law that included chickens and questioning the legality of leg snare traps.

Good fences make good neighbors. Be a good neighbor, keep your ladies on your side of the line....and then give 'em some eggs too!

the term free range doesn't provide the chicks the right to go where ever they please...

the jerk, as he was called, has the right to not allow your birds to "free range" on his property...
