Neighbor's Dogs attack - your opinion??

Is this to say a ferral cat should suffer this fate? There are reasons that county and state laws do not include cats. They are far more difficult to control than dogs.
I have 3 or 4 ferral cats that I feed but cannot control or confine them without trapping. I have trapped 3 females and had them spayed and released. They have yet to bother my grown chickens but I know would kill chicks if they could.​

it sounds horrible but where i live you are allowed to kill what ever is bothering your animals....but i call the animal control and tell the people before I start doing that or if you do not want to do that see if you can catch the dog carry it to the shelter .... if you have already talked to the neighbors about it...I have had to carry lots of dogs off... i do not like to do it but I am not going to have animals killing my animals....

horrible I know but some times you have to do what you have to do...

I don't like dogs. I have no use for them unless they are working farm dogs. But I would HATE to see one suffer a slow death. If the neighbors won't keep their dogs in their yard or leashed when out of their yard then you have to do what you have to do. Quickly. Shut up, shoot and shovel. As many have already said, it's the law...and it's on the side of the poultry owner.

Fortunately for me I only have one well controled dog in my neighborhood (if you can call an area zoned for agriculture and light industy a "neighborhood") If that dog attacked my birds the neighbor would pay for the bird and keep better watch on the dog. Fortunatley for me, they are getting chicken also, so they totally understand.

Hey, maybe that's the answer. Convert all your neighbors into chicken owners.

I never said the cat SHOULD HAVE TO SUFFER THIS FATE. I do think though, that if someone is truly concerned about their pets' welfare, they would CONTAIN it. Cats carry diseases, just like rats or other wild animals. If you can't contain them, give them vaccinations, spay or neuter, but ARE feeding them, you are contributing to the overpopulation and disease issues. Kudos to you for spaying three females. You are feeding 3-4 cats now that aren't yours, I must assume number 4 is not spayed or neutered, and that probably none are being vaccinated yearly for feline leukemia, rabies, or any number of other infectious cat diseases. They are also potentially killing your neighbors' chickens (if they have any), spreading the abundance of fleas and ticks from themselves to other peoples' pets, children, etc, and are basically becoming nuisance animals. Live and let live is a wonderful creed to have, but at my house, loose animals and feral cats are treated as threats to my pets, livestock and children. I would hate for someone's spayed feral cat to bring rabies to the wild animal population in my area, or even to my children if they are inadvertantly bitten trying to "pet the kitty". To reiterate my earlier point, the dogs should not have been loose to kill the cat. But, the cat should not have been loose if it was someone's pet. What makes a loose cat less nuisance than a loose dog? Because if it is sheer size, I have seen some 20 pound cats in my day...

ETA: in my opinion, cats are NOT more difficult to control than dogs. People just think cats should be allowed to roam free all the time and don't think or care about the potential for disease spread or that cats can decimate wild bird or livestock bird populations.

3 neighborhood dogs ganged up and killed all 9 of our chickens last year. The neighbors apologized and offered to pay for them but we said No, spend that money on a fence to keep up your dogs. Of course they did not. DH was shooting them with a pellet gun whenever they came around because you can't shoot stuff in the city limits with a real gun(don't have one anyways). 6 months later those same dogs attacked our elderly dog ,almost killed him and created a thousand dollar vet bill. This time we called animal control and luckily we still had photos of the carnage. All three were finally taken by animal control. I wish we had called them earlier but we hadn't bought the permit for keeping chickens. Now our neighbors (3 separate houses) hate us and we are so scared of them getting some kind of revenge. One of the guys regularly goes to jail for wife beating and being drunk in public. I really hate this situation, we love our house and don't want to move because of ignorant neighbors...

Thankfully I have not had any dog issues. (Coyotes, yes).

But I did find a cat in my chicken coop back in October... the birds were out free-roaming and he was just hanging out in the coop. Young unneutered male, ears bloody with mites, and an untreated abominal hernia. Most darn expense "free cat" I've ever gotten, but my goodness is he a lovebug. An indoor, dumb and happy lovebug.

(I tried to ignore him, but he spent two nights on the back deck crying. **sigh**)

There is also a feral part-Maine coon that roams the neighborhood (rural/agricultural), and spends a lot of time on my property it seems. Won't let anyone close to her (can't catch her for neutering). I have not encouraged her (NO feeding), but she seems to be a good mouser.

If I did have a dog problem, I wouldn't have it for long. SSS.
