Neighbors setting up for disaster

You could also imply that your coop was infiltrated by coons until you secured it...doesn't matter if it isn't true

That's just crazy! Don't people do any reading? There was a heartbreaking story posted on BYC detailing the loss of this woman's hen and week old chicks. I think the predator got through a gap that was less than a foot tall and at the top of the coop. If you can find that story and show the mom, maybe she'd think twice about setting up her kids for the gore they will inevitably discover. I think the post was called "They've been Murdered", a very sad little post.

Yikes! I hope the grandkids didn't see that! Did the neighbor talk any more about it?

I doubt the grandkids saw it as they just visited every now and again. She really didn't say much about it. I guess it was about what they expected as they really didn't get them to start raising chickens nor did they have anywhere to put them. They were just disposable toys. She had bought a metal chick feeder trough for them that laid back there for a while until I picked it up and put it to use.

Talk to the wife, not the husband. Tell her that the coop requires wire to protect the chickens and that her daughter will be really sad to find chick parts all over the coop....yes, make it that graphic. Let the wife do all the nagging with her know-it-all husband....and then let the chicks fall where they may. My mom always says, "You can't cure stupid."

I think that's evil, and I never use that word lightly.

I am going to talk to the Mom, and tell her that disaster is imminent. Actually I won't have to make up a 'coon story. My Sisters friend had a coon get in through a gap in her coop and kill all but one chicken about a year ago. She caught it red handed too. Got a shovel across it's head for it's trouble too.
I'll just tell her in as good and positive way as I can. Kind of put it like, "hey, everybody likes a chicken dinner"
After I've said my say, it's in their hands

x2! It's also why I think chick and bunny sales should be banned a week or so before Easter! Oooooohhhhhh carp like that makes me soo mad.

Let me tell you a secret. Although MOST of you either already know this or realize it. This is exactly why TSC will only sell chicks in batches of six unless there is ONLY a lower number available, due to losses of chicks, or a shipment of odd numbers. We may tell people it's because "they thrive better" or "It helps them stay warm better". These are all true of course, but it's really done to discourage the "AAAWWWWW LOOK!!" "Easter chicks!" "let's get a couple for the grandkids to play with" mentality. We of course are discouraged from telling the customers this truth because it might "insult their intelligence"! The way I look at it, if someone is buying chicks for that reason there is no intelligence to insult, but don't tell my employers I said that, lol.

I know these people did not get these chickens as throw away pets. They are just not informed correctly
