Neighbors setting up for disaster

Talked this morning with the Dad who was outside and I said exactly this "you know there are alot of raccoons around here, aren't you afraid they'll get in and kill your chickens?"

His reply..., he "had chickens when he was a kid, and knows how to take care of them. He never lost any chickens when he was a kid"

I said my piece, good luck Dude

I have neighbors just like that . . .left their smaller horse out last winter during a horrific ice storm, poor girl got down and could not get back up . . .hypothermia set is and they had to shoot her. I knew they had lost a horse last year, but did not know the whole story until last night when their nephew told me . . .why that horse wasn't in the barn I will never know, but there again ignorance and neglect killed a perfectly nice little mare. They have had all kinds of animals thru the years and the DH thinks he KNOWS everything about everything. I like them, but do not ask ?'s anymore or volunteer anything. They have a white fox that is penned up on a long low built pen that just breaks my heart and a gorgeous yellow tailed pheasant whose mate got loose and he just sets all day in his pen with nothing to do . . .drives me nuts, as I would have turned him loose to see if they would breed and give us more of those gorgeous birds. They "take care" of everything, just to the point of necessity, but never do a thing extra. Makes me sad.-

If they are housed / confined in close proximity to coop most predators will at least be slow to approach. I am not too keen on pit bulls either, at least in context of how many are kept or used in by area but even my neighbor's pit bulls that would likely chomp my birds if given a chance still seem to provide some protection from varments by making a major ruckus when the they now predator is about. If your neighbors keep dogs in close proximity to birds, then former may eventually lose interest in doing harm.

I have chickens that are super housed...so does my mom...I have a dog that will eat my chickens but also anything else that comes in the yard and she doesnt....she got raided by skunks! Long story short,a good dog is a huge help!!!

Well, at least you tried!! I feel bad for the chickens that are going to be in danger. People like this shouldn't have animals. I believe every possible precaution should be taken for the safety of animals. Would they do this to their kids???

Talk to the wife and let her know their chicken coop is a coon and possum feeder! We had chickens too but my grand parents cleaned up the carnage before we could see it. One morning I got there first and found two hens dead and the culprit still inside, a huge possum.

I was only 10 but I beat it to death with a 2 foot long piece of 3/4 inch pipe!
