Neurodivergent chicken keepers

Tests are good! Especially retests. Saying as an example that I have been tested for Autism as a kid multiple times, but it kept going negative.
Turns out they updated the criteria a year after the last test I had, and I finally got the official diagnosis this year in February.
Anyways hello! :frow
Yeah I know.

One thing that's not the greatest is being disabled, & having your SSI taken away over stupid stuff.

I don't know but I personally like using the labels so people know that I can't see properly 😆

Not all labels are bad, being able to find others with similar disabilities can be very helpful. Not only is it nice to talk to people with similar struggles but you can also share ideas for what has made your life easier, and maybe find something that might help with one of your own struggles. Which can include chicken chores!

Some like labels and being labeled. Others don't like it. It all depends on the person.

As someone who never knew what half these "labels" ever meant when I did it was extremely helpful to finally be able to understand why I do what I do, think like I and think and feel how I feel. That could've happened sooner if people hadn't tried to "not label" me.

Also I've found I get along with/enjoy being around other neurodivergent people better so why can't we have a thread to find each other?

Agreed. My mom always suspected I was autistic, but nobody believed her because the misconception that autism is a man’s disability. Even though I’m a girl, my mom got me tested about five years ago, and yup I’m autistic with a low processing speed. It wasn’t exactly a surprise, but it’s nice to be able to tell people why I have trouble with social cues, talk about chickens a lot(one of my hyper fixations) etc.

As for neurodivergent people being easier to get along with, I once read about a study where three teams of people played a game of telephone. The autistic people team preformed just as well as the neurotypical team, but the third team was made up of both autistic and not autistic people, and that team’s communication deteriorated much faster than that of the other two teams.

So I guess having autism is like a bantam showing up to a bird family reunion, and being expected to run like the emus.

LOL yeah that's one way to put it. Sorry about the ramble but more explaining on stuff how I see it.

Sometimes its more than just a "label" but a way to inform others... Yes I have X thing! There will be difficulties with things due to X.

Being deaf and hard of hearing for example, it does make things a bit more difficult considering I'm oral DHH (deaf and hard of hearing) who doesn't sign. Working outside in the day is a bit uncomfortable as I wouldn't want my devices to get wet from sweating.

Or such, the Autism and Social Anxiety makes it tricky for me to communicate and I often have to advocate to people that, hey I have this. Do understand it may make things a bit different.

Also it's perfect ok if some choose not to use labels, or if they do. Sometimes it helps having people simply understanding.

Me personally, I see the issues with labels creating groups and different cliques that then form a "you're not a part of us, stay in your group" or "you don't fit every check mark of our group, you cannot be here" grouping things based on people's personal attributes tends to create a sort of tribalism/group preference IMO

I’ve found that tends to be primarily an issue in certain online spaces, where people get kinda gate-keep-y or fundamentalist, for lack of a better word. I find even vague labels to be helpful, because there’s a huge difference between “neurodivergent (ocd)” and “neurodivergent (plural)”, for example. I’m gonna look for groups of people with the same kinds of experiences as myself for some things, and people with different experiences for others! Singlets aren’t usually much help with system stuff, but sometimes it takes someone allistic for something else to make sense. It all just depends! Labels can be helpful for sorting/identifying, but I’m of the opinion that they never should be the most important thing or the basis of an identity. They’re like modifiers, I guess? Sorry, that got long! Apparently I’ve got Thoughts

Modifiers work too, and sometimes they help in getting the tools you'd need. This is a very good way of putting it, and I was struggling to find a way to word a response.
And then no two autistic people share 100% of the traits, no one is getting put in a definite box. Agreeing they shouldn't be the "main factor" of someone. It's just something they happen to have, and it's cool to meet with others who may share similar experiences regardless. I actually never got that opportunity to connect with people this way off screen.
