Neutering your Cockerals so they can live!

Why don't you obey the law and re-home them they probably won't make it through surgery but your vet forgot to tell you that because he just wants your money
If you noticed I said a 10% chance of death; the vet told me that and said that was too high for his liking. He was honest. Of course I expect to pay for his expetience, knowledge and time. I am not pursuing rehoming because the people told us if the roosters don't work out they kill them. Their lives are of value and we as owners are responsible for their safety.

That isn't accurate, though. A mature man's voice absolutely can change if there is a loss of hormones or an unbalance in hormones. A person's speaking voice is largely behavioural... hormones and genetics just control the range of tone a person is capable of.

Regardless of all that - I personally find it morally reprehensible to force an animal to endure an optional procedure for the benefit of the person's emotional whims. I see it all the time in every aspect of animal ownership. True, the bird is your animal to do with as you see fit (within the law), but I do really wish people could pull their heads out of their behinds and think with their head rather than their heart sometimes. What is in the best interest of our animals is often NOT what people want emotionally.
Please know that these 3 boys (especially this one) are being extremely rough on the girls and I feel it is my duty to help my hens! This is not an emotional whim! I am trying to keep him alive at the same tim e. Do you have the same anger at the ones who do the caponizing without anesthesia? This little man will feel nothing!

You know what you could do that would be a heck of a lot cheaper and kinder for the birds? Make a separate coop for the boys. Simple. Or, if they don't get along with each other, then stag tie outs and barrel houses.

Two of my favourite phrases are - "There are worse things than death" and "ANY life is not always better fhan NO life." I use them in reference to humane, respectful harvesting or euthanasia obviously... But I wish more people could wrap their heads around the fact that being in charge of an animal's safety sometimes means making that final decision for the good of the animal.

For the sake of the birds involved, I hope this procedure goes well...

You don't have to justify yourself to anyone here. We understand why you're pursuing this action, even if some disapprove. You keep doing you.

I did some editing on some recent posts here. Lets be nice here people. We all have ways of keeping animals, doing things in life, if the OP chooses to keep their birds in this fashion, lets not bash and berate them. Give them the encouragement they need, or do not post at all.

Thank you for your understanding,

Agreed with @AsaDotJava. If your roos are being too rough on your hens, separate them. It will cost a lot less and be much safer than caponizing.

Thank you :)

Haha I actually had to Google to see if you were referring to a chicken breed! I didn't even know there was one called Java... I'm slowly learning that there a ton more breeds out there than the "standard" ones I grew up with!

Alas, my screenname is uncreative - it is just my name lol Java is the first part of my last name.
Sorry for the confusion.
Javas are the second oldest American breed. (Dominiques are the oldest)

No worries! I ended up researching Java chickens, then the Isle of Java, the languages, the people, etc etc... I like to learn :)

I will be devouring those websites this evening... thank you so much!
