Nevadans?

Missy, you are going to have a good day today.

The duckling zipped all the way around the whole shell and then stopped. It must have been resting because it didn't move until I had to leave for work. So it's now in the incubator all alone waiting for John to get home. I know it really isn't but it sounded good. John said he was going to add another sponge to the incubator once he gets home and boy did I almost lose it, I calmly said no everything is good so far and do not touch the incubator until we are done.

Silly husband, he's just as nervous about this as I am. He's ready to start some more hatches as soon as we can.

That's so sad! I know that feeling, it is just awful! So sorry for you!

The BLRWs get frisky and do a fly, jump sort of thing, and even jump on each other

Is it possible it jumped up and hit its head on the brooder lamp or the brooder cover? I always here mine flying and hitting the lamps.

When I got my order of Ameraucana chicks last year (now the parent birds to everyones chicks) I lost two for no apparent reason. I never did figure it out what happened to them. They were under the other chicks in a corner, flat and dead. I was heart broken, so I feel your pain!

I just found one of the BLRW chicks dead in the brooder.

It looks like her neck was broken. I don't know what happened. I think she was a pullet, too. The neck is floppy but the rest of her body is stiff. this is my first chicken death. I'm just stunned. Everyone was fine last night at midnight. She was lying on her back at the back of the brooder.

Well, I'm thinking it could have flown into the brooder side or cover. the lamp is above the cover. They have been flying around a lot. I was just so shocked to see her lying back there when the other chicks moved. I know these things happen. Everyone looks and acts healthy so at least I don't think it's some sort of illness.

sheryl, I'm looking forward to the duckling news you'll have this weekend though. That'll help cheer me up.

and congrats on the rabbits, Missy.

Oh for goodness sake, do you think Aubrey had a funny farm going on??? I ended up getting 4 rabbits, because the friend who accompanied me wanted one, and I'm keeping him until we can get her supplies tonight, and the guy said we could have the fourth. I figured, two breeders or one dinner... I didn't turn her down.

So I took them home, and had a client coming within 45 minutes. I figured, ok the old coop will work. So I put them in there with water and vegetables, then got ready for the client. 5 minutes before the client got here, I realized I had put burrowing animals in a coop with a dirt floor. I went out and checked on them, and they were just cuddling in the straw, so I figured I was safe for an hour. But Tater would not SHUT UP because she was not accustomed to this new kind of animal. The coop is dog-proof, but she was being too loud, so she went in the house during my appointment. Plus, I had to take Barbeque off the nest (she prefers to lay in there instead of the new coop) to lock the rabbits in, and she ALSO WOULD NOT SHUT UP during the massage. I heard the neighbors' radio going... probably to drown out the squawking chicken. Also, Original was threatened that some new animal was in her territory, so she was also loud.

I'm between clients right now, and I ran out and crawled in straw to get the 4 rabbits. Of course, they're terrified, so my arms have bloody scratches. Right now they're in the bathtub, behind closed doors, and Barbeque is back on her nest. The cages are out in the yard, but I also need to watch my dogs until our ground rules are established. It won't take long at all, but I have to be available.

My friend is coming back over after this next massage, and we're going for food and supplies. The other 3 rabbits will probably sleep in the tub, and tomorrow I'll get their area all set up and cozy. And establish the ground rules.

The client knew had animals, but it was a little insane. At least the 22 chickens in the house were nice and quiet.

This client is also the one for whom I dogsit. That was when we had 4 chickens, and the miniature schnauzer showed me all the weaknesses in the coop. After about 5 digsitting experiences, he got to know the rules... but now we have a lot more than 4 chickens. Plus ducks coming, if all goes right with the hatch. I had to turn her down.

So if anyone wants to dogsit a giant schnauzer and a miniature one for a week, I'm looking for a reference. The giant one is really sweet. The miniature one is a little sneaky... he acts sweet to your face, but he thinks he knows better than you. We rarely have problems, if I let him know the rules... and my client sends them over with shock collars.

Yeah Missy, thanks for the laugh! I'm also chuckling because of how fast chicken math has taken hold of you and Elizabeth and Sheryl!

Um Ron, the chicken math hasn't really set in with me though. I was able to contain myself to only having 2 chick babies this year. But now the DUCK math disease is much worse than the chicken math disease could ever be. It's so bad that my incubator is going to be in full use as long as those ducks are laying. No one should even attempt the DUCK math course because once you hold one you will be a goner and then the DUCKS will rule the roost.

Guilty.

I condone myself that I have 3 friends lined up who want to take any of my extras. We'll see how the hatchery chicks come out, because there are some of these new babies that have already secured spots. I'm sooooo in love with Sesame! She's sleeping in my lap right now.

Guilty on the love thingy too. Lacey is such a lovely little girl. She loves climbing into my hand and now she's flying off of it. Amanda is still nervous though and isn't really friendly but tonight she did try to step into my hand but her nerves got the best of her and she walked away.

Nothing going on with the duck eggs atm. M4 is still zipped with the membrane intact, I'm so praying it isn't shrink wrapped. S4 is now pipped so it should be zipping tonight. The other eggs are just rocking back and forth here and there. They seem to be right on cue.

I have a video of M4 rocking last night, I just need to upload it to utube and then I'll post the link here.

Although I'm super duper excited for my ducklings, I'm willing to wait for the next hatch if everything doesn't turn out right. I hope it does, though!

So far, the lavenders are flighty except for one roo who gets really concerned when I'm holding a baby that starts to cry. The buff x wheaten are shy. The wheaten/BW are very easy going, especially Sesame! The black split are calm but keep to themselves. The BLRW pecks my hand whenever I reach in! Roo for sure! Not postive on the BlackLRW, though.

Older chicks: the lavenders are flighty from me, but have no problem with their buddies. The marans are a bit aggressive. The BLRW aren't too bad, which is good because they're the largest in the bathroom brooder. Plenty of room to get away, though. They will probably be spending the day outside by the time the Ideal chicks get here and my current babies move to the bathroom brooder.
