Sunny, I want pics when you get all that garden stuff in! We usually just haul stuff in and out until last frost date. Often we unload our extra seedlings before then, and expect the recipients not to mess up and let them freeze, then we just have our own plants to carry in. Last year, when it froze so late and the plants were so big, I made a shelter out of Christmas lights and frost blanket. Boy, was it pretty! Everything lived through that horrible week, when other people lost plants.

Oh I remember you telling me this. That was such a great idea! All of my lights are the LEDs now so they don't put off any heat but I do need to keep an eye out for a few strings now just in case we got a super hard freeze. With the straw bales it would be easy to run some lights in between the plants.

I do need to take pics when we set this up. Thanks for the suggestion I would have forgotten.

hi guys
I can just imagine the brooder covered in sunny's nose prints

Polish are sooooo cute can't wait for pics
you guys teach me everything i need to know about gardening and we love your posts missy.
The two crops we always failed at were corn and rasberries

Yeah raspberries like a lot of heat, for too long a season, for our climate and you can't really do it in cold frames cause they like to spread out. They do really well in mild areas that get more rain than we do and a little more humidity. Course most everywhere gets more humidity than we do. Corn likes to grow in a huge stand. Meaning a bunch of it needs to be planted together in a group for it to grow well. There are a couple of varieties that will do OK in smaller plantings but not many. We will be planting a lot for this reason but will sell most of it cause there are only 2 of us now. We can't eat that much in a year (some will be frozen).

I'm copying this post here from the CALIFORNIA thread because it has some updated info on Sunnys and mine hatch and I'm wondering if anyone has input on this low hatch on the EE's.
On a happier note, we have 9 babies hatched! 7 of them are Polish!!!

I'll get pics tomorrow! I'm a little upset about the green and blue eggs since not one has even pipped but I can't look at it that way. I have to look at all the precious little miracles running around in the bator right now! That is what I learned from Linda today and I'm gonna try to look at it that way from now on!

Well, I have to say I'm disappointed in the EE's too! And surprised! The roo and the hens should be ideal age for producing healthy hatching eggs. But so far you haven't gotten ANY EE's to hatch, the two, non Polish that hatched were from my "brown egg laying chickens" from the feed store (I believe she buys her chicks from MacMurray) I don't get it!

We pushed hatching out the Polish since they'd only been laying a few months but yet got a pretty good hatch rate from them. You only started with 11 of those right?

One more thing, when I hatched EE's last year, they did hatch over 3 days. I set 20 eggs that had been in the refrigerator and some up to 2 weeks old, because I wasn't planning on hatching them until I lost my whole flock....and I got 14 to hatch! If I recall I got 7 the first day, 5 the second day and 2 on day 23 so you're probably not done. I can't imagine out of all those eggs you'd only get 9!

I'd like to hear from those who have EE or Ameracauna hatching experience and see if there's something we're missing. So Sunny, they're quitters right? Because I have rarely cracked open one from Big Daddy's girls that wasn't fertile.

So seven Polish

Last I heard you had a Black and Yellow (which I think should be a splash), anything crested yet?

Congrats on the Polish anyway. Hopefully some of those EEs will make their way out. I have no knowledge or insight for you, having never hatched anything.

Hahaha I must have been very tired when I wrote that to not clarify that I meant so far...
Last night we were still on day 21. In fact since I set them in the afternoon we are still technically on day 21. I'm just anxious to see the other babies is all. I just watched the first baby out of a green egg hatch. This one is a very loud peeper and made it out in record time so he is super healthy! We have plenty of time for more of them to hatch.
OK current count is 9 Polish babies, 3 from the brown hatchery eggs and 1 EE. There is one baby polish with a lighter colored crest and a couple with a little spot of light crest so we shall see how they develop. The one I am most interested in color wise right now is it looks like we have a little chocolate baby Polish. This one is a huge fluffy chunk! SOOOOO cute!!!!! And I will have to keep this one if he truly feathers out chocolate (my latest obsession).

I mean he is not a diluted black (which is what most brown in chickens is) he is truly a dark rich brown color! Anybody know if this means he will feather in brown? Anyway I tried to get a pic of the ones that are dry and all fluffed out but apparently my house is too cold right now cause they instantly swarmed into one big ball! I didn't have the heart to force them to stay out long enough to get pics. Poor things.

I've never hatched Polish before so this is a lot of fun! Their little vaulted skulls are huge even before they fluff out! I'm guessing that they are early instead of that the EEs are late. OK off to turn up the heat so we can get some pics of these cuties!

Sorry if I made you nervous last night Pam! We still have plenty of time!

Thanks Elizabeth. Since the Polish are the first from my breeding flock, it's good news and will be so helpful in helping me decide what's needed but I'm just so surprised with the others. Hopefully we'll all put our heads together and see if we can figure out why.......but hey! how bout them Polish!

Congrats on the Polish anyway. Hopefully some of those EEs will make their way out. I have no knowledge or insight for you, having never hatched anything.

Oh good on one green going and yes, I was thinking we were still early in the game! ON THE CHOCOLATE....YES, I believe but could only dream that chocolate was possible! When I purchased them last year the breeder gave me all kinds of colors that I could get. She loves color too. This is all such good news for my breeding program!

Yes if you can get chocolates to hatch regularly then that is GREAT news for your breeding program! This little one is soooo adorable! I hate to get my hopes up and then he/she doesn't feather out as a chocolate but I can't help it! I want the chocolate birds sooo badly right now! Oh I wish my house would warm up! It is beautiful outside. I just can't seem to get the temps up inside fast enough. I want to show you pics!!!

YES! I think we've been patient enough! Warm that place up, we're dying to see those big ole skulls

...oh, and do the other chicks have fuzzy cheeks?

I think there's good chance for Chocolate. The breeder I got them from said they have a roo that has over 9 colors in him! I'll have to sort through the genes that make up what and IF "she" turns out to be Chocolate, figure out who made it since I let them all run together right now.
