Nevadans?

Whenever I start to freak out that I don't have the right "grow equipment," I remind myself... it's not like tomatoes are a 50-year-old invention. Ok, so maybe they weren't grown in the Yukon before electricity, but Italy isn't always prime temperature at all times either. All these plants were grown by generations of people who had to work with their local climates, and still manage not to starve to death. And every single year I fret over my garden, wondering if the seeds will sprout or temperatures will snap or crickets will move in. And every year, we've still managed to feed ourselves.

My tomatoes aren't growing particularly fast, with all the trips they've been taking outside in 50-degree weather. But they're growing. And they're not leggy. And I've only lost 10 seedlings out of 500 to damping off. That's good enough for me so far.

And hopefully I didn't jinx myself for bragging.

Hello Everyone;
I would like to have an Ameraucana Roo I lost mine to a predator. I am not sure if it was a hawk (I did find a hawk in the chicken run, it tore through the wire on top of the run) or a coyote. but anyway i lost my Roo. If anyone in the Dayton/Carson City/Reno area has an extra one I have a home for him.

What variety/color are you looking for? Not sure why I'm asking since I have no mature Ameraucana roos right now. I might have an extra lavender or a black/lav split ameraucana cockerel but they are only 2 months old right now. Not a chick but def not a mature bird. I guess I'm just curious about what you're looking for in case someone else has one available. I could ask around.

I would like a colorful Roo. I don't much care which colors just as long as he is a hansom bird. I would like to keep the flock Ameraucana so I don't really want another breed.
If you find anything please let me know.

Welcome Rikoshe, it's nice to have you with us. I know we will be able to help you sooner or later with roos. It's hard for us to find places for them when we get them. I'm sad to hear you lost your roo but it does sound like he did his job protecting his flock.

You guys are all making me jealous with the gardening getting going around here. I haven't had anytime to start mine yet. I must get my leeks and tomatoes going this week or I'm not going to like the results later. My garlic is up and growing, it's already 4" high. I have over 35 bulbs up right now. My garlic was great last year and I'm hoping it's great again this year.

My friends and co-workers are helping me get my spirits up higher today and also yesterday. They totally understand why I'm feeling so sad, it's almost like a mini depression. I don't have depression but I can relate more with people who do get this feeling. I mean in just 1 week we found racoons, lost 4 ducks in the hatching process, Harmony gets bit by a dog and Wynonna dies from what looks like stress. She was the one that got her toe nail stuck in the fire pit and I found her hanging upside down and not breathing. Her back had no feathers on it and I thought it was the other chickens pecking her but it was her doing the pecking. She was pulling out her own feathers. I think she just gave up.

I have a dozen duck eggs ready to go into the incubator tomorrow. Missy, you are the first one to get the first girl. No matter what she's yours, I'm hoping we get at least 3 of them so you can have 2 girls. Harmony is hanging in there. She had a choking episode yesterday when I didn't add enough water to the mash. She can only eat soft food because of her lower bill being longer than her injured upper bill. She also does not swim underwater like her brother Mo does. He swims all the way around the tub not coming up for air until he does a full lap. He guides Harmony to try to get her to swim underwater but she only dips her head in and out.

You have had a rough time lately.

I hope this next hatch goes well for you

So does garlic come back every year? Or do you need to plant it annually? I think you plant it in fall, right?

you can have your pick of my wheaton blue whaeton roos that are 4 weeks old

Thank you.

You plant garlic each year in the fall either the end of September of the beginning of October. It pops up early spring and you pick it once all the green is gone. Then you let it dry out for a few days. Then I remove what I want to plant again and the rest we eat. You only plant the outer cloves of the garlic.

Sheryl, is there anything we can do to help you feel better? It's been an emotional couple weeks for you, that's for sure! Good luck on the next hatch! I'm really excited to get my ducklings, but it's like last time... if it doesn't work out, I understand. If you only get one girl, do you think anyone would mind if I took care of a boy for awhile, just long enough that she has a companion until she can mix with the flock? Sahara's ducks arrive around the 13th of April, so they'll be at least 2 weeks old by the time yours hatch.

8 hours before my husband is home! I have one more project to work on today, and it looks like it will be windy but warm enough to get a lot of it done.
