Nevadans?

Morning everyone! I must say the past several days has been very hard on me. I feel like I've been beaten up. I need to stop this feeling.

Seth - if you have sand as your bottom for your chickens then it can cause curled toes. Not enough heat usually is the reason.

Lacey, Oh my gosh I'm so glad they made it. I can't wait for pictures.

I need to post updated pics on my flock, so that will be coming up soon. It's starting to look like Lacey might be a boy after all.

Seth, the other reason for the toes may be vitamin deficiency. It looks similar to a chick in my first group last september. Have your mom buy Poly-vi-sol infant vitamins without iron. It is liquid vitamins for human babies. Give your chick a drop or two in the mouth daily and see if that helps. My chick recovered fully after about a week on the vitamins and then I added some to the water fora while after. she is just fine today as a pullet.

Hope you start feeling better, Sheryl. don't give up hope on Lacey yet. I read that wyandottes can be tough to sex until about 8 weeks, so you never know. that being said, I have 3 BLRW suspects myself. I'll give them until 8 weeks at least.

some of the ameraucana chicks are warming up to me a bit now that they have more space. I have been able to spend time with them out in the coop after work and they seem to be getting more used to me. It was hard when they were in the brooder because i think they would just get so scared seeing me looming over them from above. one of the W/BW pullets has flown up onto my lap twice. she is so pretty. I think she's BW. the wyandottes are all so tame and friendly. Splash, one of the suspected BLRW roos, continues to be so sweet. He always comes right up onto my lap for a little snooze. If I lived in a more rural setting, I would keep him in a heartbeat.

I stepped on an egg last night in the coop.

It was getting dark and I didn't see it on the floor in my pathway to close the pop door. Oh well, I guess we are getting enough but it still bummed me out. I gave the girls a little lecture on nest box use. I'm sure it will help!

Ok, gardening question. It appears that my seedling heat mats are not working any more. Is that a problem? I'm thinking it may be a good idea to replace for at least my tomato and pepper seeds. Any advice on that is appreciated.

I start my seeds by putting them in the furnace room. The only time I've ever used a heat mat was when the eggplants weren't coming up fast enough, and I moved my husband's reptile mat under them for a few days. The furnace room is a good 20 degrees warmer than the rest of the house. Some people also put them on top of their refrigerators.

I wouldn't replace the tomato/pepper seeds unless it's been about 3 weeks and they haven't sprouted. 2 weeks to sprout is normal if it's not quite warm enough.

Sheryl, I hope you get feeling better!

One of my buff x wheaten has curled toes, too. Otherwise, he/she looks just fine. I'm wondering if it's too late to do anything about it.

I will try putting them on top of the frig. i just planted them last week so it hasn't been that long yet. thanks!

Sheryl, you're not the only one that feels like she's been hit by a truck. I got sick about a week and a half ago, and was recovering with just cold symptoms left. Well, I'm getting sick again! It's so frustrating. I need to go plant these peas, so I can get out and paint on days when it's actually dry. But I can't seem to get up and get moving. Uggh.

The good news is my husband gets into town at about 5pm tomorrow! He keeps telling me to take it easy, and he can help me when he's home. But there's so much that needs done, and we both have wages to earn as well.

Good luck on the nest box lecture!

I have to watch where I step every time I go in to collect eggs.
I've never used the heating mats you're talking about, but I know that the heated bases for my poultry water founts have a thermostatic control in them that turns them on at 35° and off at 45° - maybe the mats have something similar?

Hope you feel better, too! It's frustrating when your energy level is low but there's much to do. yay on your husband coming home! That should help you feel better.

Well, it seems the heating mats are not essential anyway.

If i got showgirls i would get a 2 2week olds and i would take the chipmunk and the silver chipmunk.
Why is 2 a girl?
What time is the swap ?

In fact, I planted all varieties of eggplant in the same flat, except for the Rosa Bianca that I got from Sunny. When I remembered those, I put them in with a flat of tomatoes. The other 3 varieties didn't come up as fast as I wanted, so I used the heat mat... up in 2 days! But a week later, the Rosa Bianca are sprouting now with no additional heat. They've even been outside (are outside right now) and through temperature swings of 30+ degrees. Same with some of the hot peppers... didn't sprout in the furnace room where the others did, but are sprouting now in odd temperatures.

And if all else fails and it's too late to start more peppers and tomatoes... I have about 500 starts going right now. I might have a few extras.
