I used to live in the Niles Canyon area of Fremont, a very rural area for being in the Bay Area - it was a 1¼ acre lot with a 3,000 acre cattle ranch over the back fence. Anyway, one night the back sliding glass door was open because it was hot, and I heard a noise and looked over and saw a huge raccoon sitting right at the opening. I started to go over and shut the door and it's hair was bristling and it was snarling at me with some serious fangs! It was easily 30 pounds or more. I was more than a little nervous 'cause it wasn't scared of me at all.Biggest raccoon I ever saw was on my kid's great great aunts fence in Berkeley. I had a my Akita nd GSD's in the yard and they were going nuts. I saw that think that was as big as my dogs and didn't even think when I ran for the dogs. Later aunt Corrine says "Girl, you and those dogs could have been eatten by that thing!" I swear I have never seen one as big anywhere else and I've seen a ton of raccoons.
