Nevadans?

If they are coming in at night and have their own sheltered area outside as well as their own coop I am sure they would be fine. Do you get hawks or owls in your area?

There are a couple of hawks that circle the area. Which is another reason that they can't go out with the grownups... they're just not safe in the open yard. The little coop has chicken wire over the top.

Yes separate breeds, not different colors. She was talking about Black Orpingtons and Black Australorps. Same colors. The Australorp is also called the Australian Black Orp. The Australorp originated in England when Orps were brought over (to Australia) and mixed with other breeds. Here is some good info on the subject.

I meant another color of orp

Yes! Thanks so much for posting the pictures and video! Both your chicks are super nice! The lacing on your BLRW rooster chick is awesome!! And I really like Amanda's color! It is nice and clear of any ticking.

Now all you need is a black lav split rooster for your lavender girl and a BLRW pullet from Kirstie's batch and you will be able to produce some super nice chicks for yourself next spring!

I really like his lacing too. I don't know what to do with him yet. Amanda is becoming much more friendly and I'm really enjoying it. She's cuddling now to. It took her a bit to cuddle.

Mine aren't foraging yet, either. I gave them some spinach leaves and they just glared at them. The older chicks loved them, though. With my first chicks, I found that they didn't eat the vegetables I gave them until I put them outside and the natural foraging instinct kicked in.

I give mine some mealworms and they do great. I'm surprised they don't like the oatmeal and egg combo though, my chicks last year loved it. The ducks enjoy it though that's for sure. I haven't given them any veggies yet except when they peck outside on the greens coming up in the yard.

Good morning, everyone. I figured I'd stir things up and post about random nonsense so everyone has something to read. It's a public service. Or something.

I actually can say I might be bored today. I have one client, and she's at 5:30pm. It's too cold and windy out to get any real gardening done. Pretty much, I just go outside to take care of animals, then come back in. Brrr! The seedlings need transplanted, but then they'd need more space, and right now the peat pot trays fit perfectly under the plant lights so they don't have to go outside. So I'm going to make an ovenload of a high-protein buttermilk/egg bread for my husband. When it's warmer, I'll clean out the chick cages and walk the leavings over to Garden #2 so I can sprinkle it into the soil.

What is everyone else doing with their chick cage litter? I don't like putting wood in the soil, but Garden #2 is so lacking in organic matter, and I'm not planting it for at least 6 more weeks. The pine shavings I'm using right now are the super-tiny kind, so they'll break down faster. Later on, I'm going to have to compost it (though wood doesn't compost as well as I'd like) or throw it out. Straw is so much more sustainable!
All I use for litter is straw. So that I can use it in the garden but also because it is a lot cheaper than shavings.
