Nevadans?

Thank you, Sheryl and Pam.

I'm heartbroken thinking about it, because she was so beautiful and so sweet. Even my husband was sad when I asked him to take care of her. But I'm not the type to let an animal keep suffering, or spend tons of money on treatments that probably won't work. I'm not strong enough yet to cull my own chickens. Maybe I won't be so attached to the next one, and I can do it myself.

You poor thing Missy. Hard decision on the sickest but you did the right thing. I'm sure all your hard work will pay off with healthy, happy chicks!!
Did I miss your daughter getting her ducks? I'm so excited for her!

She hasn't seen them yet, and doesn't even know about them. She's with her dad until tomorrow night. I get to pick her up and take her to the poultry show, but she has to go back there after, then come home in the evening. We're just going to let her walk into the bathroom and see them. I'm guessing her reaction will be, "Whose ducks are those?"

I hope everything is okay?

Ditto.

Uggh, sick chickens are the pits! I just cleaned out the big kids' brooder and disinfected it top to bottom with bleach. Good thing it's a bathroom... it's used to being treated like that. All of the feeders are soaking in super hot water. What do you think... should I give the chickens baths before putting them back? They're 6-8 weeks old.

Only one has a runny nose... two did last night. The one that was wheezing the worst is now just a loud breather. Two new ones have a wheezy click breath, but if the others are getting better already then there's hope for these two as well. I did have to cull the one that was sickest, though. She was really, really sick.

I loved her to death, but she was really suffering. When I tried to get her to take a drink this morning, and when I finally got her beak open, it was all filled with goop. When I determined that she just wasn't going to get better, and her quality of life was so bad, I asked my husband to take care of her.

The big kids are now confined to their room, and the door is shut. Anyone who walks in there is not allowed to go outside or in the other bathroom without changing clothes and shoes. (Laying hens are outside, brand new babies are in the other bathroom.) The little kids (4-wk) will get to stretch their legs a little tomorrow while I disinfect their kennel. They have no symptoms yet. Poor guys... they were going to graduate to the bathroom brooder soon while the big kids spent their days outside. Nobody's moving anywhere until this is cleared up.

If anyone was going to get sick, I'm glad it was the big kids. They're the strongest of the chicks, and they're not laying any eggs any time soon.

I made a gallon of Sulmet water, and both big kids and little kids get all their drinking water from there. A lot of food is getting wasted because I'm dumping out anything residual and washing feeders before filling them again. And I don't want to bring it into the backyard, even to compost, so it goes straight out to the trash.

It builds character, right?

I'm sorry about the chick and all the work trying to contain the sickness. I hope the others get better and no one else comes down with it.

Hope you all had a great time at the swap! Everything here is fine except for my stupid back. It hates me but the feeling is mutual. Trying to hang out at the swap would have been a disaster the way it's been acting up. I guess I thrashed it yesterday running errands.

Sorry. Trying not to whine. Anyway let me know how it went!

Sorry about your back! Is there anything we can do to help?

The swap was little, but it was really nice to see Sheryl and Elizabeth, and Seth's mom, and to meet Mandy and Julie.

Sahara got to cuddle Julie's ducklings, still trying to convince me to get some. But she admitted to Julie that they would probably come next year, because I told her, "If it's not in the house right now, we're not getting anything else this year." She got a little emotional for a second... just a catch in her voice. I said, "You really want ducks, don't you, honey?" Her dad will drop her off at 8pm tonight. I'd try to videotape her response, but that might be kind of awkward since they're in the bathroom.

Hello BullardBarnyard. I know where Wells is but not where Crescent Valley is located. Nice to see you on here.

It was great seeing everyone at the swap and thank you Elizabeth for the little BLRW pullet! In case anyone hasn't guess yet, we named her LACEY III, this is our 3rd chicken named Lacey but the other 2 ended up being roos until now. Elizabeth, your chickens are the sweetest and calmest like I've never seen before. She's doing great here too. Thank you so much!

It was great meeting Mandy, Ty and their little boy, seeing Julie, Elizabeth, Missy and Russell was really great too. It sure will be good when we get together again.

Sunny, I hope you back gets better right away. I know how you hate not being able to do things.

It was so great to meet everyone today. I had such a nice time talking to you all. I can't wait to do it again. It will be a while before the farmers market gets up and running of course, but maybe we could do a BYC potluck or something? Then everyone could see my place and get a feel for things.

Sunny I'm so sorry about your back, but I definitly understand. I have fibromyalgia, but I refuse to act like it, so by the end of the week sometimes all I can do is sit here and read to my boys. I don't mind though, I'm only 30 and I refuse to act like some drugged out zombie all the time. That is kind of why I was bribing people with free booths for help though LOL.
