Nevadans?

Well, I've been hoping one of my girls would go broody and now I have two....the problem is, they went broody in the laying boxes! In the past my girls hid a nest of their own and hatched them but these two just took over the laying box! There are 4 other boxes and after two days of some noisy clucking when the others have come in to lay, the other chickens have started laying in the box furthest from the two broodies. OK, so that solved and I'll be able to still have eggs to sell but the other issue is the laying boxes are about 2 feet off the floor and in with all the rest of the flock! So I'm wondering what to do. 20 years ago I had a girl hatch in the hen house and the chicks were hatched dry but dead so I think the other chickens killed them.

I'm afraid if I move the nests they'll abandon them. Any ideas or anyone have some experience with this?

I did have broodies that abandoned their eggs when I moved them but when I left them be that was a disaster too! I think you have to try no matter what. It doesn't work to leave them in with the whole flock.

Sunny, do you have a count on the chicks that hatched from the eggs I gave you. How many of the Polish and what colors you got of the EE's and the Polish. Since I have two broodie's I'm now wondering what I may get and would like to record what you got.

I can't believe I finally have not one but two broodie's!

Another question I have for those who have hatched from broodies, since I have two do I need to separate them too or can they be next to each other. They're buddies and are always together, do you think they'll comingle their chicks?

Some broodies will share mothering duties but I have no idea how to tell which will and which won't. I will try to get updated pics of the kids that came from your eggs and I will take notes on how many polish and how many of the others there are. There are some real beauties from that hatch! This weekend is super packed so remind me if I forget.

Great pics everyone!!!

No rush Sunny, just when you get a chance. Don't stress over it, I'd just like to get some details for my breeding program. So no rush!

Great pictures Missy! The ducklings are darling!

All three buff x wheaten look like pullets. A side view of their heads and tails would help. I am excited to see the solid buff coloring! They are SO pretty! This is good news for my breeding program! Picture # 2 looks like 3 cockerels. Picture # 3 Lavender pullet on left, single combed rooster on right. Picture # 4 two black lavender split pullets. Picture # 5 BLRW rooster on left, pullet on right. LOVE that BLRW pullet!! Wonderful wide head on that girl! She is going to be a beauty!!

The blue wheaten color on the roosters IS stunning! They just keep getting more beautiful as they mature.

Did anyone get a buff x wheaten rooster? If not, I am amazed, because that means in all the buff x wheaten I have hatched, there has only been one rooster!

I have read that the hen determines the sex so my two girls are definitely keepers! Now, this next hatch for Sunny will include chicks from my other two buff hens from a different line, so it will be interesting to see the percentage of pullets they produce

Pics! First, chickens by the armload!

These all came from the California trip. Candy hatched all but the black ones, and one of the lavenders... not sure which one. Of these buff x wheaten, I really don't know who's a pullet and who's a cockerel, except for the nearest one in the picture.

Same on these lavenders... no clue who's a boy and who's a girl. But I think I have a majority of boys.

I'm pretty sure the one on the left is a girl. And I believe the single comb is from Kirsten.

The one on the right is Punk, and I think the other is a girl. He/she has a quiet, sweet temperment... unlike Punk.

I thought I had 2 cockerels here, until I saw the combs develop at different rates. Maybe I still do have 2 cockerels, but they're just growing differently. The one on the left is a boy, for sure.

And the best reason I've ever seen to try to keep a rooster! He's so breathtaking. If anyone eats him, SHAME!

My new babies, from Sheryl's hatch. I think I'll call them Curry and L'Orange. And of course, Oh'no wants to be the mom. She's sitting beside me right now, because I'm surfing the net with ducklings on my chest.

Camping out with her babies. She's going to be upset when we shut her out of the room, so she doesn't lick their butts all night.

Hi aburey
How do yo tell if a showgirls is a boy or girl because one has a bigger comb, is bigger, but is a total wimp while the smaller one with a tiny comb is the definate boss.
Must resist buff ameracanas

missy what is your favorite color of rabbit between your two studs?

Hi Seth,

If you like the buff color, just wait until I hatch some bantam buff Brahmas! My BYC friend in Michigan is sending me eggs from her SQ flock that came from one of the top breeders in the nation! Can't wait to get them!

How are your chicks doing? Does that one wheaten Ameraucana chick still have the feathered legs?
