Nevadans?

Went to the new C.A.L. Ranchers supply in Carson City today.... I want everyone to know I did not, repeat did not buy any new chicks... Instead I bought some tiny plastic toy chicks and told my DD that chicken math struck... LOL, she was all excited until I dug through my purse and handed it to her.
Has anyone else been there yet?
Their prices are not impressive, I would rather support the small feed stores. There is a large selection though.
I suppose this is equivalent to Tractor Supply.

I hadn't even heard of it, until just now. I'd rather support small feed stores, as long as they have what I want and their prices aren't too much higher.

Too funny, I gave a few chicks to a kindergarten class in Carson City and now chicken fever has spread thru the school. I'm such an enabler. Now there's talk about the school getting an incubator and hatching their own eggs. The teachers were thinking about eggs 20 per class and there's 4 classes. Mawhahaha!
Hahahahaha!!! Too funny! I swear we won't be happy til every other person in town owns chickens. Oh wait, who will buy our eggs then? lol

I'd not heard of it either. Good to know it's there just in case. Sometimes I need something my local place doesn't have and need it quicker than I can order it online.

Missy, I was catching up on posts and read one of your posts saying how many chickens you have in your neighborhood. Still not knowing what exactly your chickens have and knowing how rapidly it's gone through your flock, despite your diligence to quarantine it, I would think that someone in your neighborhood must have lost some chickens also. Have you ask around? If no other chickens have fallen ill in your neighborhood I would think you could narrow the issue down to your property and maybe find the source. I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud.....I sure wish you could find out for sure what it is, although I know that may not be possible.

I really don't know anyone in my neighborhood. I know the people on my block, and that's about it, even after 3 years living here. The only reason I know about the other coops is because I'll go for a walk and hear one laying an egg. I've had my chickens on this property for about a year now, and this is the first incident of disease. So if it's a mouse or a bird, then it's something that wasn't here before, but entered and caused trouble.

Barbeque looks a lot better, though she's still wheezing a little bit and is sneezing. Tomorrow will end the 48-hour quarantine on medicated water. Nobody else looks sick yet.

How long does a broody hen usually stay broody? Is there any reason to try to break her of it, if the other 9 chickens are giving you enough eggs for now? We're not using the eggs for 2 weeks anyway, so I'm just letting Gourmet stay there. Though I did take an egg from underneath her today, and it had a cracked shell. I don't know if it's because she insisted on sitting on it so long, or if I need to give them more oyster shell.

yeesh, well Ruby went broody last for a month and a half and priscilla is on her second month straight and still holding strong. The only thing i noticed was that when they were both broody at the same time i have to put in extra nest boxes because they kept trying to kill everyone and eventually everyone else was laying outside the coop. I think breaking a broody depends on the bird...if they want to be broody they will always find a way

I read that you can stick them someplace with no nesting area. For us, that would be the dog kennel. It's holding ducks right now. We got a 2nd kennel from a friend, but the baby chicks will be moving out of the bathtub any day now. I guess I can just let her be and see how it goes. We have 4 other next boxes for the 9 other hens. I've noticed that Gourmet will shuffle from box to box, after a take an egg from beneath her and another hen lays. She'll go sit on that one.

We only got 4 eggs today. Our average is 7, but we've gotten up to 9 in a day. My sickie and my broody won't be producing, so everyone else must be taking a break.

yeah sometimes i do that but it became such a pain to make her go out and eat and drink and then get her locked back in twice a day so now i just leave her be. Priscilla is a nice broody anyways and doesnt usually protest too much when i feel under her buttcheeks for rogue eggs.

Oh, and I figured I'd ask anyway...

Does anyone want to adopt a silver spangled hamburg rooster, knowing he's a survivor of the Ames Farm Chicken Plague of 2012? He's almost 3 weeks, with a huge comb. He's going to be beautiful.
