Why not buy some fertile eggs? I just sold a dozen to a couple who can't have a rooster and have a broody. They have a five year old daughter and are very excited to hatch them.

If you want to break a broody....and I would if I wasn't going to use her because they sure do disrupt the whole hen house.....you can run cold water on their belly and put them in an enclosure with a wire bottom so the air can keep their underside cool for a couple of days. From what I read that's the most successful method.

I still need to move my broodies. With my husband only home on the weekends he has so much to do and we're tired at night! I moved some bales of hay around (yes, I know that's against the don't lift anything more then a carton of milk) to make room for the wire cage for one and a plastic dog kennel for the other. The girls are buddies and I think it would upset them to be separated. I think separate lodging will be safe enough to keep their chicks apart, at first anyway.

I can't move them myself with my post surgical limitations and my husbands in Omaha, NE until Thursday, do you think it's OK to wait? They're about a week into it. I could have someone help me if necessary.

I'm tempted to get eggs, or even chicks, to put under her. But I don't know when to expect this disease ordeal to be over. And how would the chicks be with the other hens? My other coop is occupied right now.

Hmmm, I haven't moved mama rabbit into her new cage yet, but it has a nesting box. Maybe I can move the rabbit, then move Gourmet into her old cage. The worst that can happen, other than being loud beneath my neighbor's window? She'd poop on the rabbits beneath her.

sorry missy, I am very busy ripping my hair out with a newly testosterized and rapey Mr. Pants. I swear you could make a comic strip out of the two of us. He is SO naughty. The only words i could think to describe him correctly are bumbling goombah. and i dont even know if those are real words.

Just yesterday he crowed in front of me and i bent down to grab him mid crow. Well i surprised the little booger and he jumped about six feet in the air (well above my head) and made the most god awful mid-crow screech while landing and falling all over himself because for some reason he is the clumsiest animal i have EVER seen in my life. Oh dont worry, to compensate he chased down poor olive and gave her a good what have you before she beat the crap out of him.

Well, usually the chickens are well behaved and don't start making noise until a respectable time in the morning but this morning, they were making a big ruckus at 5:50 a.m. I had to go out there and let them out and bribe them with produce scraps and leftover toast. I don't know what got into them.

I am seriously considering selling one of my welsummers. She is so loud. It's really driving me nuts. she has to sing the egg song before, after and during laying and sometimes just for the heck of it when someone else is laying. She's a nice big girl but she's getting on my nerves. I guess that is a shallow reason for selling a chicken but sometimes you just have to have some peace and quiet!

Im a little dissapointed with gregory pec, though...he hasnt got any gold in his feathers yet! I sure hope he grows up to be colorful, i waited so long for a big colorful roo!

He may still get some gold feathers. My CGM boy is a couple of weeks older than yours and he just recently started getting some gold in his feathers. He's at Lacey's now so I can't update you on his development any more after this. It was really hard to see in photos but in person you could see the gold coming in on his back .

Too funny, I gave a few chicks to a kindergarten class in Carson City and now chicken fever has spread thru the school. I'm such an enabler. Now there's talk about the school getting an incubator and hatching their own eggs. The teachers were thinking about eggs 20 per class and there's 4 classes. Mawhahaha!

Barbeque looks a lot better, though she's still wheezing a little bit and is sneezing. Tomorrow will end the 48-hour quarantine on medicated water. Nobody else looks sick yet.

glad BBQ is doing better. Hopefully no one else will get sick. I bet you are exhausted with all that's been going on and worrying about your chickens!

Does anyone want to adopt a silver spangled hamburg rooster, knowing he's a survivor of the Ames Farm Chicken Plague of 2012? He's almost 3 weeks, with a huge comb. He's going to be beautiful.

that's a bummer after everything. don't be too quick to suspect your speckled sussex of being a roo. I've heard they look very deceiving judging on the comb. I need to take some photos of my chicks again. I've been slacking off with this group.

I'd sell one of my hens for the same reason. We tell the kids that we don't keep roosters and meanies. But I also ask my neighbors to PLEASE tell me if one of them is being disruptive. I have no problem getting rid of a loud hen if it means my neighbors don't report me to animal control.

Burger's comb is comparable to a rose comb on my full-grown wyandotte. And bright red. He's almost 3 weeks. I Googled pics of hamburg pullets, and all of them were older than Burger, with small, pale combs. I don't have to worry about getting rid of him for a long time, and he'll be a valuable rooster to someone who doesn't have a problem with his history.

Exhausted is right! Today, I found mouse droppings in the chicken feeder, so I hung it even further from the wall and even higher off of the ground. Sour was sneezing a lot, but she was in quarantine on 2 days of antibiotics, like the others. So hopefully, if she does have it, it won't be too bad. At least I can get more stuff done, since I'm not sanitizing every single day.

And Sheryl... I have learned to be careful what I wish for! Sahara's ducks didn't imprint on anybody, but they do recognize me as the food source and safety source. When they're outside and I call, they answer and start walking toward me. These new babies, though, imprinted immediately. The first night, I got no sleep because I was up all night with crying babies. One, in particular, is always asking for me. When I walk toward their brooder and speak to them, they get excited and try to crawl out of the brooder. Right now I'm letting them sleep on my lap because they were crying, with more than enough food and water. They even went with me as I walked Sahara to school, then cried when I put them back in their brooder. They weren't too happy when I had to put them down so I could leave and go garden.

Have you used Oxine at all? There have been people who use it that say that once it's been used the birds show no sign of the diseases afterwards. I use it and love it. I had a roo that looked bad for about a week, but I kept misting him and he is fine. He's the only one I've had tested and no signs of anything. You can use it to mist or fog and if you use sitric acid you need to wear a resparator. so I didn't go that way, but while he was sick, I treated the hens too. A couple were making gurgling sounds and after the 10 days I treated they haven't had a problem and didn't get any worse before getting better. I'm also going to start misting my hatching eggs with it before I set them. Especially any that don't come from my own birds. OH and I posted a thread earlier about one of my chicks. I ordered a gallon from Reliance?????? a while back. It goes a long way. They had a special and you go the citric acid free, which I haven't used and free shipping. I got it for about $4 less than I had seen if anywhere else.

that's an amazing story about your chick! glad it turned out ok.
I'm going to look into Oxine as well. sounds like a good preventative and safe for the animals.
