The seedling sale was a moderate success. I earned $550 for Joe's scout troop. But I also over-planted by about 200. Does anyone want tomatoes and peppers... FREE? I have about 200 Indigo Rose, 4 or 5 pineapple, maybe 10 cherokee purple, 10 sajuaro, and 10 cow horn.

Indigo Rose: medium-sized tomato, dark indigo skin, red on the inside
cherokee purple: heirloom tomato, dark maroon with purple streaks
pineapple: heirloom tomato, yellow with orange streaks
sajuaro: mild anaheim, suitable for grilling or eating raw
cow horn: heirloom Amish hot pepper, comparable to a habanero

I'm going to also offer them to my daughter's school, and see if the Food Co-op would like them for their seedling sale next week. They're already hardened off and want to be planted now.

Okay...because I am desperate...I started a new thread. I realized that I had to because after 3 years of keeping chickens I only know about 3 people I can get local hatching eggs from. Looking at the first page of this thread I see tons, well lots, of LV people but I rarely see any of them on here more than once or twice. I talked to a guy from LV I found on another thread and he said that we needed a Las Vegas thread because we need local resources and I gotta agree. I have a link to this thread there and I will definitely still check here every time I'm on. I've learned so much from you guys and feel I know you although I'm mostly just a lurker. Please check out the new thread and recommend it to those you know are from the hotter half of the state! Thanks!!! I'll still be stalking you here!

I don't mind sharing, though some people may find this gruesome. But culling chickens is gruesome, period. My husband used a pair of garden pruners. They were strong and instant, cutting through the spinal cord. It actually worked so well, and so humanely, that we went out and bought a larger pair for when we need to process the larger chickens.

Sorry you have to do it. It sux.

Thanks....the deed was done. I moved all the chicks and moms into my grow out pen and that poor thing could barely keep upright. My poor husband was trying to act like no big deal but I saw how hard it was for him. I saw him give the little one a quick kiss but I acted like I didn't see it.....

Sheyrl, you were right...once I handled a couple of chicks the moms were good with it.

Sorry I can't remember who told me the 48 rule and why, but I had to move them into the grow out pen because when I went in this morning they were both in the same box. Evidentely the babies all chose the same mom so the other mom joined them all. That left her eggs uncovered. Two were crushed open with perfect chicks but probably needed the extra day and even though I moved the remaining eggs, they were just scattered and I found another one that looked crushed and a prefect chick inside. The moms were so happy to have dirt under them again they've been digging around and all the remaining eggs are scattered and buried! I guess I'm going to have to dig them up before they rot.....it's a tough crawl for me with my back so I'll have to see if I feel better tomorrow but I know I've maxed my luck today!

Here's a picture of the moms and their 11 babies. They're a very good team but I'm wondering if one should be released back to the flock and how to do it?

Awwww... my husband admitted to sweet-talking the chicks to calm them down before he did the deed. It really warmed my heart that he would take such care for a living creature that he hadn't formed any other emotional bond with. I didn't feel so bad about having him do it, since it really did need to be done.

Missy I would love to take some of the Cherokee Purple but I have a whole dining room, living room, and several pots etc outside of seedlings that I can't plant because of the move.

Pam I'm so happy to hear about all the gorgeous chicks! That is such a sweet but sad story about your Hubby. The eggs can wait until your back feels better or, hopefully, you can get someone else to help you get them out.

Good luck finding folks to share chickens and eggs with vegaschick. I know there was another Vegas thread cause I am subscribed to it but no one posts on it. Hopefully you will have better luck with yours. Maybe you could pm the Vegas folks from the list on the front post of this thread. If you get even a few folks to respond that may be enough to keep you in fertile eggs for a bit.
