Nevadans?

We picked up our first chicks yesterday from Jones feed. 3 of the Reds are ours...the other 3 are for our neighbor. Here's hoping they are all girls!

"Hey! What are you looking at?"

They are really entertaining. One of our dogs completely ignores them, but the other one is going to be a challenge. I hope that once they are bigger he will leave them alone. For now, they are in a safe, dog free room. Now it is time to start prepping the yard, fence, and getting a coop. I've got a friend at Tuff Shed designing a few coop options to attach to our current "Barn".

Using Jaiden's cheapo camera is the best I could do for pics bein's I broke my own camera.
The further away ya are the clearer the photo....too close really blurred the pic.

Both chicks are very active and vocal. I'm tickled to have had 2 successful hatches for Jaiden to participate in.

Talk about an exhausting experience!
Pentunner, you're right on about that!!
A nap is on the agenda for this afternoon.....Papa can entertain Jaiden.

We stayed up til midnight, then I was up at 5:30 am checking on the chick in the incubator, fearful of what I might find since I hadnt heard a peep all night. Found the chick sleeping next to the egg thats still incubating....it had moved it around. Can the chick on the outside hear or sense the chick in the egg?
I removed the hatched chick and added it to the brooder tank with Moon Shadow, it immediately drank and ate some chick starter, then poo'd. Never thought seein' chickie poo, other than my granchickies poo

, would make my heart so happy.
The new chick snuggled up next to Moon Shadow and the two of them looked at each other as if to say "HEY, whar ya been?"

Took the opportunity to candle Egg #4 since I had to clean out the shell and some poo.... its alive and moving.

so far so good.
The egg is very dark, didnt look like there was a lot of room left.....I thought I could see a head and a foot.

Eggs #1 and #2 are under the broody hen yet. I believe hatch day is next week, maybe Tuesday........gunna leave them be til I hear peeping under the hen.

to all.

Bloomie, That last picture says it all. Say hello and a hug to your grandchickie, this must all be a blast for her.

We got back from the swap a few hours ago, been busy getting last minute things done for the party. I met Jan and Julie, arm wrestled them for a couple of serama chicks and lost. We did leave one Sebright poorer and two Seramas richer. One of which is a little Black pullet! One of the BYC members caught me just as we where leaving. I didn't see anyone else but might have left to soon. There was a really good turn out I was surprised at how many people kept coming. Fuego did an outstanding job of representing Seramas as pets. He rode around in someones hand the entire time we where their. Everyone in my family was amazed at the variety there are in chickens since none of them have ever been around chickens much.

Gotta run the party starts in 10 min and the wife is doing the "EYE" thing.

Congrats! They are so cute! I was going to go back Friday to get a couple more, but decided to stop at 14. Take pics daily if you can, you'll be amazed how fast they change. Good luck.

I added some pine shavings today to the box. You woulda thought I was torturing them with all the panic and the noise. They're starting to jump on top of the waterer and feeder. Very proud of themselves! Their wings are developing nice and it's cool to kind of get an idea of how their markings will be (am I correct?). They are also starting to get their tail feathers. Here are some pics:

I'm hoping this will be a silver laced polish.

And I believe this will be a Sultan

Knemeyer: Yours are as cute as mine!

You all weren't kidding about how fast they grow up! They already look bigger and their wing feathers are really growing. Next thing I know, they'll be asking for the keys to the car! HA!

Better get that coop started...

i cant believe how cute all these baby chicks are!
i saw my first ever silkies today in real life, and am now very torn between having one of them and a barred rock. Even my man liked the silkies! My question: does anyone know where to get one? i cant just order one silkie from a hatchery. i think i am going to e-mail the swap lady and see if she can track down the kid who was selling the feisty black silkie hen...omg, its so hard to pick out the perfect girls for a flock!

btw, i did ask her after i got home what happened with elenore (my easter egger) and she said that elenore went home with a wonderful family that donated a silkie rooster, yay!

BoulderCityFoul, Knemeyer, and Bloomie...those are some cute chicks ya got there! I swear that you can almost see them growing. Actually, I think everytime they do that stretch thing with their leg...they grow an eighth of an inch or something!
