Thanks Evonne! Maybe a little long distance relationship?

My husband doesn't pay much attention to them either. He just thinks of them as just another one of my crazy projects. It's wings are forming showing the pattern. I'm very excited. I didn't end up getting any silkies this go around. Maybe next time I get chicks.

Hi everybody! Congrats on the new babies that so many of you have acquired this week, those polish are too cute!!! Echetino I have golden sex links and RIRs (golden sex links are Rhode Island crosses) and they are good layers. And congrats to Bloomie for a successful hatch! You have all been so busy while I was gone this weekend.

Ok all you southern NV folks! Today is going to be hot everywhere but especially hot for you! We were in Mesquite yesterday and it was 108. We kept a spray bottle full of cool water 'cause the air conditioning in the car is on the fritz, so we were fine but I did lose my one silver girl to heat stroke while we were gone.

We had neighbors put out frozen water bottles but she was so shy and was the smallest in the whole flock so the bigger birds must have hogged the coolness of the ice and she wouldn't have pushed her way in.

I was so looking forward to breeding her to one of the silver roos I still have. I may have to try again next year!

Good luck all, with keeping your flock cool in this heat!

SparksNV insulation is always a good idea. Just finish the inside after installing since some insulations can be bad for the chickens. Ventilation is most important (even in winter) but insulation can help moderate the heat and cold very well. I didn't insulate and now I wish I had since using light bulbs in winter have had their own problems (like when the power went out when it was 2 degrees outside

).

Horsefeatherz I can't wait to see what those mixes look like! I think I'm going to order more Ams for next year again (just for local folks though). I really want some silvers and lavenders.

Thanks for the B-day wishes aubreynoramarie. DH and I finally got a chance to celebrate last night. We had a nice dinner on the way back from Mesquite.

I have been hosing down the shade areas a couple times a day. The chicks and even bigger birds really like the wet sand (I cannot blame them - it is hot on the sand). Oh I really wish I had trees and grass like some of you lucky chicken lovers! The few small trees we have, all the shade is taken by ducks

. I do have a shade clothe up in the broody pen, and one over my MF Cochins (the ones in q-t), and of course lots of plywood chunks up on buckets/planters - to create shade. I love the heat, but then I can run to the house when I get too hot

If you are looking for chicks - I have some for sale - various ages and some I can tell if cockerel or pullet - some it is still a guess, a lot fully feathered and no longer brooding under mom, one clutch of 8 who are still brooding. My chickens are mixes - Splash Orpington roo over EE hens, Del hens and I have a couple Orp/Cochin chicks/pullets from my one good broody Cochin (Blondie). I have mostly blues (cochin mixes are white with splash coloring coming in) and blue mixes. So if you are interested just let me know.

I had the hose on earlier, I should probably hose the whole area down like you did instead of just 1 area. I think I will, I like that idea.

Its a warm day here in Elko County. We had to prime the swamp cooler for this weeks upper 80's to 90's.
being able to leave the windows open during the day didnt last very long.

SUNNYDAWN, frozen berries and frozen water jugs? How hot does it get where ya live?
I'm familiar with Las Vegas temps, lived there for over 35 years....caint say I miss it either!
big_smile.png

Summer temps where we live ( 5600 ft ) are typically in the high 90's, about 10 degrees cooler than Elko.
Should I be thinkin' about adding ice cubes the chickens water?
I read they like watermelon during the hot months.....any other suggestions?

The egg that was pipping yesterday hatched early evening.
Turned out to be black & white. Took right to the others in the brooder tank and they took to it.
Was the cutest thing to watch as they greeted each other.

The other 2 eggs are in the incubator........been some rocking and peeping but no pipping yet.
I'm hoping our positive incubator experience holds our for 2 more eggs.

Did I share the new coop my husband built?
We found a coop on BYC that we thought was cool and we had a similar set up with the horse stalls, so we tweaked the idea to suite us.
Using 2 stalls, we made a coop and attached run.

We utilized old horse shoes for the door handles to the coop & the run....added wire to the windows and put the plexi-glass framed windows on hinges so they open for ventilation.

Inside we used the plant containers from the plants we bought at Home Depot for nesting boxes and left over fence posts & railroad ties for the roosting bars, planks from a few well used pallets formed a shelf for the birds to sit on. We found some tree branches for the roosting bars in the run, but I dont have photos of that space yet.
