Nevadans?

Hi all!

Been enjoying the tales of crop growing.... Right now my tomatillo is trying to hang on, but the peppers are doing great and I cannot believe I actually have a couple of tomatoes on the mystery unlabeled plants.... They're kind of heart shaped almost like an oxheart tomato (I do not think they're romas). Time will tell.

Thought y'all might enjoy the following, especially those with ag endeavors. It's gone viral and is one of the fun ones and IMHO the best of the week:

enjoy!

No, no, don't clean the eggs. Mine broke a couple too and I pulled the major part of the yuck out and put more bedding in like you did, but didn't clean them and I couldn't believe how clean and shiny they were in a couple of days.

Could you put some wire up to deter the other chickens from trying to lay in the nest? I did that and we didn't lose anymore eggs. The broodies could still get out but it was enough to discourage the others from trying to get in.

Wet the sheet and it really cools things down. You can do that on your bed sheet too.

Day 18 today on the first batch of eggs! I candled the 3 remaining ones, and they look identical. The air pocket looks like the chart says it should, and there is a bulge-type variance on the dark line. A head or a butt or something? Last Tuesday I candled, and I SWEAR I saw something move in two of them.

It's only day 5 on the 2nd batch, but I candled anyway. 2 of them look like something might be growing. Locos don't show anything yet, but we'll see.

Joe wants to see them, but he's being a huge jerk to me today, trying to bully me out of doing the dishes.

Russ left for a week in Seattle, so I guess I'm a bit more of a pushover. I told them he can see the eggs tomorrow IF he's not such a jerk. I also worry that too much handling isn't good for them, and I don't want to take the chance of chipping a shell.

I spoke too soon. It runs for awhile and then the motor shuts off.

I replaced the motor last year and it's not been running perfectly since then. Maybe the motor doesn't have enough power for the cooler? I don't know. I'll go out and check the belt again later. Maybe it needs to be even looser. so, we're a bit toasty here today. It was running for awhile and shut off so it has to rest for awhile before it's ready to go again. Not looking forward to this week.

Hmm... Well there are a couple of possibilities. First off, many people don't know this, but the swamp cooler is pulling in a lot of air from outside, and that air needs somewhere to go. So you need to open some windows to let the excess pressure out, otherwise the motor has to work twice as hard. Open at least two windows in areas of the house that are farthest from the cooler. You don't need to open them a lot; depending on the CFM (cubic feet per minute) rating of your blower, 3 inches ought to be good. This also makes the swamp cooler work better at cooling the whole house, because cool air will flow from the swamp cooler towards the open windows. You can literally feel the cool air blowing past you towards the open window!

The other possibility is that your motor is undersized. Once again, you need to know the CFM rating of the blower, and the HP (horsepower) of the motor. I've found the way to calculate what HP motor you need for what CFM blower before on line, but I just tried now and couldn't find it again. Maybe you will have better luck (but hopefully my first suggestion works for you!).

Also strategically placing fans around the house helps relieve some of the pressure from the blower and gets the air circulating the way it oughtta. Its really funny, Ron, that you wrote that because my dad and brother gave me a huge lecture on it the other day, hahaha.

MISSY! so so exciting! I think we are on Day 16 but I am really bad at these things. Thats from me going back a few weeks and telling you guys that i let my bird set...so yes, a few days behind you. we have good air cells and one has good veining but there is too much growth now and I cant really see into the eggs anymore. I am having a REALLY hard time seeing into the EE egg so i have no clue if its quit or is still going. If that thing hatches its going to be one interesting chick. 1/2 sultan, 1/4 orpington, 1/4 ameraucana. I am still trying to grasp how my tiny rooster knocked up my largest hen.

Want to see some super pretty chickens?

It's tempting! But I'm not so chicken-crazy that I want to pay $80 on 6 eggs, subtract those that don't hatch, and weed out the roosters. I'd probably end up with a single $80 pullet.
oh yes, Cheryl Cohen. Shes got some great bird. Ive been keeping an eye on her tolbounts for a while. If youre REALLY interested just wait for her to casually talk about culling. Thats how I ended up with a pair of her super rare mille fleur leghorns. wink wink wink!!!

Haha I can't wait to see how it turns out!

I have to go buy some more Flock Raiser and straw before I have babies. If I put them on my "to do" list, then the date is here before I know it.

ahhh i am so excited!!!

plus i just realized that while i know who the EE egg belongs to, I am unsure of who the other egg belongs to. I was worried about having to guess who mom was but I just realized that by process of elimination it is a bantam brownish layer. given the bantam brown layers i have crossed with a white rooster the color of the baby will determine exactly who mama is. woo hoo! Im hoping its my silver laced cochin because those two colors create something called "black patterned gold incomplete laced". sounds like a mess, just like i like em.

I Googled that, and still have no idea. But I agree- I like the funky ones. Can't wait to see one!
